When I lived in Michigan (1987-2020) seeing disguised test mules was a regular occurrence. I always thought that the disguise made them stand out. Plenty of times I had the opportunity to see them in parking lots and then give them a good 360 once over. Often, the car was covered in various padded mats rather than a geometric paint job.
