VIN and emission plate measures
« on: December 07, 2024, 22:44:17 »
Hi all,
I have a US version with the VIN and emission plate in the door jamb on drivers side.
The car has undergone an extensive restoration, and the rear left fender has been replaced so now am I missing the holes for the plates.
So I wonder if somebody could provide me with the measures to the rivets. (Preferable in millimeters).

Thanks
/Lars

Hello Lars, hopefully you can use the zoom function to see the measurements in the photos but if not the measurements are:

From the bottom of the door catch to the center of the top rivet (screws in my case because I'm still looking for the rivets I bought) on the upper plate is 55mm.
From the center of top rivet of the upper plate to the center of the lower rivet on the upper plate is 113mm.
From the center of the bottom rivet on top plate to the center of the top rivet on lower plate is 14mm.
From the center of the top rivet on lower plate to center of the bottom rivet on lower plate is 150mm.

All rivets (again screws in my case) are 28mm to the right of the vertical "seam".

Since the holes in your plates might be different than mine, when installing I suggest drilling the holes for the top rivets first, then use the plates as templates to drill the lower holes.

If clarification is needed, let me know.  Lee

Now, as you have answer to your question, I wanted to share an idea. Sometimes when I have newly done plates and when I lose the holes for its screws for some reason, rather than drilling new holes, I just glue screw heads in the holes in the plate and stick the plate to the body with double adhesive.

Hi,
Thanks for the measures and thanks for the idea with double adhesive.
After all, I think I will stick to the original way with rivets.

Well, I am not sure if there were rivets used. I do not know about the US specific plate, but VIN plate and paint code plates were screwed in place with philips head screws.

Engine number plate or tauchaggregat plate are different story - they were fixed with special rivets.

Hi Pawel,

Its correct that the pant code plate and the Euro-VIN plate attached on the bulkhead is fixed with small philips screws.
But the US -version VIN plate in thee door jamb seems to be fixed with rivets.
On my car it was before I removed them, on the other hand has the car been resparyed several times so it could be wrong.
I have also looked on US-VIN plates on google and almost all are fixed with rivets.

I hope the the rivets are correct because mine are now fixed with rivets according to the measures given by Lee.  ;)

Best
/Lars

VIN plates that are located in the door jambs on USA cars that I have and have seen were all riveted .
