Capillary tube?

Hi.  I'm starting to take things off the cylinder head.  I'm (incredibly slowly) embarking on my engine rebuild.  Is this the delicate capillary tube in the video?   Any advice on removing this whole device?  Thanks.

Yes, that is the delicate capillary tube. It is somewhat protected by the braided sleeve. Unfastening the 14mm fitting is the correct way to remove it. However. you must make sure that the capillary line does not rotate with the 14mm fitting as you are turning it or you risk twisting and breaking the capillary tube. Use penetrant first then closely monitor the braided line while turning the fitting. An alternative is to unbolt the 15mm head bolt holding the whole pod assembly on the head. You can leave all wires and lines attached and simply set it aside for now.

Thanks Joe!  I applied penetrant yesterday.  Will try the tube itself, and then the head bolt (yellow arrow) to remove the assembly.  This car has a long history of old bolts coming off properly.  It looks like the whole assembly needs about a 30mm wrench (orange arrow) to unscrew the assembly out of the head.  Is that right?

I believe the pot comes off the head with the small bolt, not the large 32mm nut.

Thanks Mike.  I measured 33mm off my adjustable wrench, I agree 32 is probably right.  It would need to be ground down skinny.  I got the bolt on the side loose.  Can't remove it due to interference from fuel pump.  It feels too short to reach into the head, we'll see.  After light cleaning, you can clearly see a seal or bushing by the head and a washer by the housing.  I'm thinking the housing needs removed turning this 32mm nut.  I'll look in the BBB.

The whole cooling block comes off with the smaller bolt you have highlighted in your pic.

From memory it’s a 17mm head.

Once you have that off, you can fit a socket over the fitting that goes in to the head.

Once you remove the 15mm bolt securing the pod to the head, here's what that fitting looks like (pic). There's an aluminum washer between the pod and the fitting.

I saw a good exploded view diagram in my parts book.  How does the pod come off the fitting?

The 15mm headed bolt holds it on. Just unfasten it and the whole pod will come off. Don't mess with the 32 mm fitting.

The part that looks like a meat grinder, the pod and bolt are NLA.

If you decide to remove the 32mm fitting #232 to have it plated. Be careful, I've seen the threads in the head come out with it !!!

I have several spare heads and removed this fitting from one of them when I cleaned it up. It was difficult, but it came off, fortunately without stripping threads.
