Deflector exhaust muffler

Hello there,

I am assembling a new after market exhaust system.

It looks like there is no deflector (some kind of tryangular protecting steel plate, No. 18) attached to the center muffler.
I could remove the old one and weld it to the new one, but my supplier says they never do that.

Should I weld it on and what is the exact function of it? Protection, strength, sound?

The #18 plate prevents the protruding edge of the muffler from getting caught somewhere, especially if this happens while driving, then major damage can occur. I would definitely weld the plate on.

And it stabilizes the welding on the muffler

Yes that plate is welded to the muffler. Mine has three spot welds that attaches it to front of muffler at the muffler seam

When. Replaced the original tail pipes and muffler s with MB original replacement pipes, muffler came with the guard plate already attached.

Were these plates only fitted to 280's, can't see them on earlier cars?

If you have excess to a parts catalog, look under the part number, might give you clue as to if and at what production number the guard was added.
