Hagerty tips the Bronco II, Volvo P1800, Mercedes G500
« on: January 20, 2025, 01:22:42 »
Hagerty just published its '2025 Bull Market List: 11 collector cars to buy and drive this year!'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz6X3hoIgAQ

The full list is as follows:

Jaguar E-Type (Series 1 3.8 coupe, no surprises there)
Volvo P1800
Ferrari 400/412
Datsun 280ZX
Ford Bronco II
DeLorean DMC-12 (I thought that was already collectible)
Mercedes G500 (W463)
Honda Prelude (1997 - 2001)
Dodge Magnum SRT-8
Mini Cooper S (R53)
Lamborghini Gallardo (6-speed manual)

Maybe coincidentally, an average-looking Bronco II sold on Bring a Trailer today for almost $16,000.

AFAIK, the Volvo P1800 has always had a bit of a following, just like Citroens. A bit on the eccentric side I'd guess.
As you state, the DeLorean has always been somewhat of a collector car.
I get all the others...but the Prelude? Not getting that one. That would be its fifth generation. If you "de-badged it" it would be a wholly unremarkable old 2-door coupe. Nothing special except, as the British accented reviewer says, remarkable build quality. Yes, just like other Hondas and Toyotas of the era.

All the others on that list--quite distinctive in their styling and cache which aids in collectibility and price. But the list isn't what's good or not, it's their prediction of what is in the rising prices of a bull market. Each one has their own following and I bet, an online forum or club somewhere.

Who knows. The best anyone can do is a crystal ball.

You know you're old when you look at the R53 MINI and think it's so much smaller than the current models, yet was huge compared to the actual Mini. I do like the R53 though

R53:
Length :    365.5 cm / 143.9 inches
Width :    168.8 cm / 66.46 inches
Height :    141.6 cm / 55.75 inches

F66 (current)
Length: 387.6 cm / 152.6 inches  (+22cm)
Width: 174.4 cm / 68.66 inches  (+6cm)
Height: 143.2 cm / 56.38 inches

(old) Mini
Length: 305.0 cm / 120.08 inches  (-60cm)
Width: 141.0 cm / 55.51 inches  (-27cm)
Height: 135.0 cm / 53.15 inches

I found this photo recently. Circa mid 1970s. That's our 1966 Cooper S in the driveway at our old home in Medfield, MA, USA. Next to it is one of our friend's mother's cars, dubbed "The Yellow Submarine". Interesting size contrast; a tiny Brit next to a gargantuan American. The Cooper S was quite special. Lots of upgrades and changes from stock. Forged rocker arms (because the high compression engine kept breaking the pressed steel ones!), Straight cut, close ratio gearbox. 165/70HR10 tires. Integral fender flares. Twin SU 1.5" carbs ex-MGB. Electronic ignition. It was fun until college/university got in the way.
