where do Rubber bushing go on headlamp housing unit?
« on: January 27, 2025, 22:34:28 »
Hi folks
Currently refurbing my headlights on Bessie.

Unfortunately, Bessie didn’t have many of the rubber bushes left when I took the lights out! Ie some missing and think even may be in wrong place!?!

I’ve tried to find drawings, but to no avail. I’m getting close to the reassembly stage, so if anyone might have a drawing /picture available showing said bushes, I would be really grateful

Many thanks as always 😁

I guess you have the Euro headlights. Frankly, I do not recall a lot of rubber bushings there except those for adjustment that go on the reflector, but maybe I am wrong. There are two gaskets - glass to lamp frame and lamp frame to body (not present for the US assemblies).

Attaching the pictures I found.

By the way: I tried the frame to body gaskets from SLS - did not fit. Those from Mercedes (A 000 826 62 80) - beautiful fit. Just my experience.

A 000 826 00 94 bushing (adjustment)
A 000 826 01 39 shackle (this little anchor thing for adjustment)

Hi,
there had been different sealings for the headlight housings.
At first it was just a small sealing strip that was embedded in the surrounding groove of the headlight housing.
Later DB reworked this rubber and applied locking nipples to the seal, which were pulled through holes in the headlight housing to hold the seal in place. This seal is also significantly larger and often lurks out from under the headlight trim rings.
This is also the reason why there are headlight housings with and without holes for these locking nipples.
You have to check first which sealing you need.

Brilliant
Thank you!
So from what you say, the rubber buffers are for the lens, not the housing itself. I guess over time, people have worked on the car not quite knowing what they were doing, so randomly put the buffers on the housing 😱

Yes, managed to pick up original gasket from MB and all fixings are being replaced too!

not sure what is your position on the screws that are holding frame to body and the one holding chrome bezel.

The are M4 with, sort of, coned tips so that they go in easily into threaded holes. The one holding chrome bezel has also this washer that prevents it from falling out from the bezel when you replace bulb in some dark place during the night.

They are available at Authentic Classics if you need them.

Hi, if you look at Pawels pictures you will see 2 sealings, one  between glass lens and housing AND one between housing and body.

Got the replacement screws for ‘main body’, no replacement ones sought for chrome surround 😱. Hadn’t thought of that. Obviously someone had changed in the dark previously as no washers in either! Presume, it’s a sort of captive washer rather than unusual plain type?
Will have to see who sells in UK as authentic classics and sls export de I have to pay stupid sums for p&p then get charged import duties plus handling charges on top!!!

Yes, it is captive washer (so that is the English word for it!) made of fiber or plastic: https://www.authenticclassics.com/CHROME-PLATED-OVAL-HEAD-SCREW-DIN-966-4x16-p/auth-005245.htm

I did not find it in Europe when I was looking for it...

The important thing is, in case you do not have the original screws that hold lamp to body, that the regular replacement M4 may have its head a bit too wide, too big diameter, and you may need to file them narrower - otherwise their head may interfere with
the glass and damage it. They way I did it was with a drill fixed to the table and a file (I do not have any lathe).
