230SL Horn contact plate
« on: February 26, 2025, 04:04:36 »
I have been having issues with my horn not working and can't seem to figure out the issue. After removing the steering wheel and inspecting the contact plate I noticed that there is only one wire going to the contact plate (see picture) - is this correct? Or should there be another wire?

Also, I noticed that one of the tiny springs is missing. Can I order this part or is it better to buy a new contact plate altogether?\

Appreciate the help! - Brandon

Hello Brandon, i don't know what springs or other components are on the switch contact plate, but have a look on here for some details and clear pictures, perhaps someone who has had theirs apart may comment

Two wires should come from the column switch, if you pull the switch off of the column and expose the connections, you'll see a brown wire and a black/yellow/pink wire.  A brown wire should go from there to one side of the horn connection, and another wire, either black/yellow/pink or just black should go to the other connection on the plate

Thanks Bob this is very helpful.

Looks like I am going to have to take off the turn signal switch to see if I can find the other wire you mentioned as I don't see it.

Just found this post, your early car may have a slightly different horn contact arrangement, although the wiring will be the same
