Danger!!! Do not ever use a damaged fan blade. These are made of magnesium which is extremely strong but brittle. A damage or bent fan blade can fracture and break off, becoming a projectile. I saw the result of a damage one which broke off and went right through the thick steel of Mercedes sedan hood!

8 blade fans were used on sedans from the same time period. I had one in my car ( Red Rocket ) and it just barely fit because is considerably larger in diameter. I probably still have one around somewhere.

Hi,
A 9-blade plastic fan for the sedan cars is still available for small money.
It can give you a feeling of the noise.

Hi Dr Benz, If you have one around and would consider selling it, that would be great, I see there are a few part numbers being quoted for them A108 205 02 06, A108 205 05 06 and the one which my parts book quotes is A108 205 06 06. Not sure what the differences are though, Thanks

Isn't the 230SL fan a bit different from later fans? I remember having some problem buying one when I started my restoration.

Looks like the fans changed over the years, quote from JA:

"Cannot say for sure. I would venture a guess;   Earliest W113 cars had a fixed four blade fan. The six blade fan was used on later early cars.  The eight blade fan improved cooling a little more on the latest cars. These multiple blade fans moved more air and offset the additional strain and heat from the larger engines, popular accessories like AC and larger alternators, and emission devices.

The trade off is they take a little more horse power to spin the eight blade fan!

Joe Alexander"

The later fans also have a viscous clutch, which the earlier ones didn't.  Not sure if the diameter changed?

Yes. Aside from the visco clutch on 250/280s, the fan itself is smaller on the outside diameter. If you change (on a 230) to a different water pump and a visco clutch to mount the 8 or 9 blade 250/280 fan, the fan will interfere on the left side shroud (at the air cleaner side).

My fan just cleared but it was close to the shroud. My 230 has a 250SE engine with a visco clutch.

Well, good for you. I have a similar set up (250motor). I had to trim at least 3/8" of the OD of the fan blades to clear the shroud. Its was a standard plastic 280sl fan blade from Pelican or someone like it. Not sure, but may be they have different OD fans.

Thanks for the suggestions, Hemmels are just a nightmare to contact. For a large company their communication is awful, so I gave up. The one in German, once you add VAT and delivery it becomes stupid money. Illjust  keep on looking.

Hemmels are a member of the forum, perhaps send them a message, may also negotiate a discount, although if they don't respond to phone calls, they're unlikely to check their messages

I hear through the grapevine that they've undergone yet another change of ownership and re-structuring and are now focusing on electric conversions.
