STOP WITH THE SEDAN REFERENCES!!!
« on: August 11, 2005, 18:51:03 »
Hi Guys,

Now that I have your attention...

I don't know about you, but our friendly experts are constantly telling us "oh, just find a sedan donor car" or "that's the same as in a sedan".

Well, I have news for you.  Junkyards around here at least are as rare as hen's teeth.  FOREIGN car junkyards even more so.  AND, they don't have 1960's era Mercedes sedans in them!

SO, when our experts tell us that it is the same as a sedan part (just today we have information on brake drums and steering parts...)it would be far more helpful to tell us WHERE these darn sedans are resting!  If I knew, it might be worth a trip.  Names?  Places? (Besides Joe's backyard...) :)

I think mostly you will find those old sedans at Walmart, crushed up and made into bicycles and barbeque grills from China. Seriously though you can search EBAY, if you like EBAY and armed with some cross reference info get a nice deal on crossover parts not listed as fitting the 113. Mostly though you find sedan parts listed as fitting the 113.

Michael,
Do you expect me to give away all my secrets? It is like finding a good fishing hole!
Just kidding.

Get to know the old established foreign car repair shops. Parts cars often gather around them like camels at an oasis. I recently found a W113 parts car at one of these places for $350.00, but probably will not part it out at this point.  The MB dealer's lot is often final resting place for old projects. They are usually happy to see them gone. They may also know of persons owning abandoned projects.

Members in the Mercedes Club can also be a resource for information on parts cars and parts assortments. There are some recyclers who advertise old Benz parts cars in "The Star" magazine and other publications like "Hemmings Motor News". The best deals you'll find will be those unadvertized treasures you stumble accross.

Lastly, Ebay motors is always full of inexpensive parts  and cars. Whole parts cars often go much less expesive than the individual part you need. You will have to educate yourself or get advice on which models to look for. Finding one close to you can be the most difficult part. You may end up like Cees who now has fourteen spare engines!

It might be interesting to start a string with information and locations on used parts sources around the world! Of coarse Michael, some may keep their  best places secret!

Did I ever tell you about the time I found the remaining parts from a Mercedes assembly line in Mexico City?

Happy treasure hunting!

Mike I think the lack of old MB's in our area is just a Detroit thing, up untill the late 80'S or so everybody in the greater metro area worked for the big 3, or had connections to the US car manufacturers. I do see parts cars in the auto trader sometimes and the west side of the state seems to have older MB's, and there's alway Ohio. :D

Or you could come to my junk yard. I only have 30 cars so maybe I wouldn't have what you want. There is the cat barn though for the brave among you....... and 4 other sheds filled with interesting items.

There was a place in Detroit call MMD  it's gone now but I still talk to the old owner. I think it's a parking lot now......

Hi Guys,

Well, having spent arguably more time and money on parts and labor over a 5 year period then most, allow me to be qualified here, as this is experience talking...

1)  Calls for used parts from this list have been largely ignored, even from those who have them in their backyards.  Ditto for the old Yahoo list and Pagoda113 as well.  Rule #1.

2)  Exception to Rule #1 is Walter Klatt, who has come up with magnificent trades on more then one occasion.  That's even better then a low price as we both are winners...

3)  The Star advertisers such as Aurora Auto Wrecking, etc. would be happy to sell you parts from a 1999 E500.  1963 Finback?  Good Luck.

4)  Those respected firms who have advertised 113 parts etc. including "parting out" 113's have also ignored requests for things as benign as wheels, horns, fuel pump cover, and trailing arms--and that's just the parts I remember asking for.  Rule #2.

5)  The exception to Rule #2 is Miller's, who managed to come up with a right trailing arm--even if it did take 2 tries.  Note that until you take your trailing arm off as we did, you'll never know if the bushing/bearing surface is cracked--as it was on mine.

6)  There are plenty of parts on eBay, yes.  But if the seller (and they are not stupid mind you) knows the part is for a 113, the price is high.  $2,600 for red tail lamps, remember?  5 years ago I paid $700 for a grill surround.  $150 for a set of AMBER tail lamps.  Acceptable prices, but not inexpensive.

7)  It is wholely impractical for most of us normal guys without acreage to buy a sedan when we need a set of brake drums--even if the sedan were to go for $350.  If we are in NY and the sedan is in Kentucky, this is even more impractical.  Price is irrelevant here, practicality is paramount.

And yes, if someone knows of a salvage yard(s) that has various old MB's in it, it would be worthwhile for the rest of us (after you pick it clean of course)to know where it is.

When I lived in Massachusetts in the 1970's, there were two local wrecking yards that had plenty of foreign cars.  At that time they were full of 1960's sedans and sports cars.  But that was 30 years ago.  The places are long gone and the cars with them.

Until someone comes forth with NAMES and PLACES I'll continue to believe that the salvage yards with old Benz's in them are largely old memories. :D   Maybe not for Joe and Dan, who can look at their old cars while sipping their morning coffee, but certainly for the rest of us.

I stand WAITING to retract the above statement when I do get a list of three verifiable old MB salvage yards.

Mike knowing that a part is the same on a sedan is good info, maybe not for you, but to SL owners from other countries and other parts of the US where there are MB junk yards. And I have a half dozen rear trailing arms, don't remember you asking. I also got my parts car from a shop on west 8 mile, out on your side of town I think, there where 2 other 113's there as well as 108's :)

Of course cross over part numbers are good for anybody, and that's not my point.  My point is that it is not necessarily any easier to locate a sedan part then a 113 part particularly if they are the same!

I needed the trailing arm during the restoration, some years ago, long before you were involved with the group...

I've driven 8 mile from west to east...what is the name and precise location of this shop you are taling about?

German only or something like that, Been a couple of years. north side of 8 mile, west of Beech Daly. All the cars are behind the building. But there should be customer cars out front.

Michael .... If you have ever visited one of my favorite web sites, you would have never asked the question.  It is the on-line inventory of several hundred "auto recyclers":
 http://car-part.com/

Enter one of the "Sedan parts" and check out availability.

That place on 8 mile was called John and Holger's.  Holger has been over to my place a few times after they both retired.
I think some young guys took over but they don't work on the old stuff as much.

Pete:  You can be SURE that when we come out again (I think it is in November once again) we'll make the trip...I owe you a coffee, (as well as some photos) remember?  Now THAT's the kind of info I'm looking for--a name, address and phone!

Jim:  If you had ever TOLD me about your website, I'd agree.  I've bookmarked it.

Norton:  I'll cruise down to 8 Mile and Beech Daly and see what I find, it's only a few miles from here.

Dan: Sorry no John and Holgers or anything like that listed...maybe it is simply long gone.
