Hello,
Replacing the two gear set is expensive and a real work out. Hopefully no one here will need to replace them soon!

A Dalton, well said.  I suspect that gear wear rate accelerates as the up and down movement of the verticle timing gear increases. With improved lubricants of today and better maintenance schedules most shimmming and re-bushing  repair procedures will be long lasting as long as the gears are not badly worn.

Tnx JA.

I often thought that if the original thrust had an oil slot across the face of the bush end [ very slight and chamfered] , it  would improve the lube quanity/quality enough to cut down on the wear of the  contact surface between the bush and gear face .. might be a good experiment for someone to try over a long period...
Something like one would see in a heavy equipment thrust washer with the cross cuts for grease retention.

From the dead-horse department-- I finally installed the seal inside the tach fitting. I froze them beforehand, but I STILL had to hammer the seal into the fitting-- no wonder it's such a b***h to remove!

Also, I'd like to nominate the O-ring (part #621 997 0040) as a recipient of the distinguished award for The Cheapest MB Part Available From The Dealership(TM)-- $1.22.  Yea for the O-ring!
