oil for injection pump

Hello All,

I am getting ready to change the oil in the car. I would also like to change the oil in the injection pump. Do I use the same oil as I do in the crankcase? Is their a drain plug in the bottom? Where do you add the oil?

There is a discussion about this in the Technical Discussion/fuel injection section about half way down.
Personally I use a small hand pump from a cleaner bottle to pump the oil out. There should be about 185-225ml of engine oil. Add oil through the red cap. There is no drain plug.
To test the oil level screw the dip stick out wipe it and then screw it back in all the way and then screw it out again. You will see the graduations on the dip stick. I think this is done with a hot engine.
My MB service agent here in Brisbane recommends changing the oil in the inj pump every time the engine oil is changed.

Daryl,
Have you seen the dipstick on the inj. pump?  It's hard to find.  I got a couple good photos of it once, I could try to post them tonight at home.  I agree with Bob on using engine oil and how to measure.  I also used a window cleaner squirt nozzle to empty the oil resivior.  I would like to know what tool they used in the 1960's for this!

Thanks for the feedback. The idea of the pump sounds clever to me. 8)  I already found the dip stick and the level is a little low. Due to the age, I no longer have a cap that is red, just metal color. Maybe I need to paint it red. :?:

I have a '66 230SL and have just gone through this exercise.  As suggested earlier I used a spray bottle to pump out the old oil; it was quick, clean, and worked great.  When I refilled the oil I used the same weight as in the engine, 10w40.  185-225ml of oil was not enough to fill to the max line on the dip-stick, as I recall I had to put in 250-260ml.  I had an opportunity to talk with a Bosch mechanic about the IP, and how much oil to put in, he recommended just over a 1/2 pint, (@ 260ml).  

The cap on my IP was also worn, I recently repainted it, used standard red paint; haven't had any heat related issues.  And while I was at painting, I re-painted the engine's dip-stick red too.

Hi Daryl,

I don't think my dipstick was ever red (see pic).  Re-filling is easier through the oil breather cap on the I.P.  It just unscrews.  It's all one big open area inside, so you can basically re-fill it through any convenient hole.
