radio hole size

my 65'230SL has a hole for the radio that is not original - a rectangular cutout, plus 2 separate holes, one on each side for the knobs - I wish to return to an original radio in keeping with the beautiful chrome industrial-art look
- I gather from the old strings that the original radios had holes of 2 different sizes, 1-3/4" height and 2-1/8" height on later models
- question - what was the width of the cutout?

I am no expert like others here, but I am dealing with this problem in a different way.  My 230SL has the original hole that is unmolested 1-3/4" by about 7". However, I can not find a resaonable Becker radio for this size. Most Becker radio you will find are the larger 2-1/8" size that were also used on sedans, the later pagodas, etc.

If I were you I would cut it to fit a radio I could find, that is, if the hole there is not the original size.  If the original size and you are keeping it that way, then join the hunt.

If hard to find in the US, these radios that fit the narrower, early opening in the dash are readily available at vendors like Wagner

My car has a Becker Europa TG that is smaller than a Europa II. Previous owner had a cd player installed  :( . Their installer cut the dash to make the new unit fit[:(!]. My local Becker-authorized repair shop (addresses on their site) found a slightly over-sized bezel to cover the hole. Not perfect but certainly better than going Becker-less. Becker also has a forum on their site and they might help you find the TG. The helped me find knobs (original with set-screws) for $10 for mine. Good Luck.

You can also obtain a new, reproduction radio dash plate with the original, smaller size opening.  Check with Gernold at SL Tech.  Then locate an original early Becker radio, or use a later Becker with an early, smaller size face plate.  Check with Becker USA.

Here's one for sale on eBay now.  Unknown condition, but if you could get it for a song, it would probably be worth sending to Becker USA (New Jersey) for refurbishing.
