WANTED: Pagoda World Contributions
« on: December 06, 2005, 22:37:25 »
Hello Members!

I'm looking for contributions for Pagoda World.  The magazine by the Group, for the Group!  (  How tacky!)  Anyway, I'm looking for the following:

- High resolution photos for the front & back covers.  These would be taken with at least an 8 megapixel digital camera for optimal quality.  That is, they would be about 3300 x 2500 pixels.  I have used lower resolution, but prefer not to.

- One-time article contributions.  If you've done something Pagoda related (performed a specific repair, organized an event, just bought your first Pagoda, etc.) and would like to write about it, please contact me to discuss.

- Regular article contributions.  If you're really experienced at something Pagoda related (repairs, restoration, market evaluation, knowing historical details, collecting historical photos, or what ever) and would like to contribute with an on-going column related to your speciality then please contact me.

- Advertising.  If you know of a business or person that might benefit by advertising in Pagoda World, please have them contact me.

To contact me just reply to this thread or click on my username just to the left, then click on Send an E-Mail.

Thanks everyone,

Rodd

Rodd,
No problem, can continue with the gas to diesel conversion if that is of any interest to anyone.  Also can contribute for basket case dealings.

Pagoda World 7 has been mailed out and depending on where in the World you live, you have either already received it or will very soon.

I hope you enjoy the content of this issue.  In keeping with the title of this thread, if anyone has anything they would like to contribute, please do so.  You will see in this issue that many different people contribute, you can too.

Please note:
Due to the fact that as a Group we never developed an automated "membership expiration reminder system", we did find that about 90 members had memberships that were more than 6 months past due.  We apologise for not having a way to automatically notify you of your membership status.  I sent out membership renewal letters instead of Pagoda World magazines to these members and we sincerely hope you renew.

Members who were 6 months or less past due got a renewal letter and a Pagoda World.

Rodd,

Can you re-check your digital photo specifications please?  8 Megapixels is only available in either professional or "ProSumer" cameras and only recently.  Most digital cameras in the hands of mere mortals are more like 4, 5 or 6MP and then again only when set at the highest resolution.

Commercial-printing quality is typically 300 DPI.  Desktop publishing is typically 125-150 DPI, and "web" or screen images, 72 DPI.  A 4x6 "snapshot" at actual, printed size of 4x6 (inches) is only 1200 x 1800 pixels, and I'd offer that "that's plenty", of course more is better for a cover shot.  2500 x 3300 takes it into a whole 'nother league.  Halftone screening done on color printers rarely exceeds 150 DPI.

Mike,
That 8MP suggestion was for cover art only.  For smaller pictures used inside the magazine, 5MP or even 3MP is fine.  I came up with 8MP for cover art this way:

At 300dpi, a cover photo would be:
8.5 inches x 300 pixels = 2550 pixels wide
11 inches x 300 pixels = 3300 pixels tall
3300 pixels x 2550 pixels = 8,415,000 pixels total = 8.4MP

Another way to get this quality is to use real film and have the genuine photo digitized.  This issue's cover was actually a negative that I had digitized, so they did this from a very small (35mm) piece of film.  Perhaps they developed it first, then scanned it.  I don't know, but they didn't provide any printed copies, just a CD.

I've used lower quality images on the front or back cover before and it shows.  The most difficult thing in finding cover art is to find a picture that someone actually took in "portrait" instead of "landscape".  Nobody thinks to turn their camera sideways to take an image that better fits on a magazine cover.

Coming back from a four day weekend trip to New York, I found PW in my letter box. Very nice piece of work! Especially the data card introduction and the wire diagrams are magnificent. I walked and taxied a lot in NY bud did not see any Pagoda or what ever other classic car. Where are they?
From the 4th to the 7th of May I am in Baltimore and from the 8th to the 10th in NY again on the occasion of the stop over of the Volvo Ocean Race around the World in those cities. Members out there show your cars on those days!

On behalf of all those who contributed, thank you.

Again, if you would like to contribute photos, articles, historical information, etc..., just let me know.  You are the people who make it worth printing and reading.

Ron,

Photos not related to any recent event can be sent at any time.  They might get used in any issue.

Photos related to a particular recent event (news) should be sent right away so they can be used with an article about that event (written by the person taking the photo or written by another person).
