1969 280SL Original Wheel options...
« on: January 17, 2006, 10:27:49 »
I just bought a 1969 280sl european style mercedes. The car I bought has no hubcaps but rims that I know are found on 1980's mercedes. How many options did this car have in terms of wheels/rims because I want original parts. Can you please help inform me? Thanks...

Hello Akulik,

The two original wheel types supplied for the 280SL were the 14" steel disc wheels #108 400 0002, which accept the full wheel cover. The other option was the  14" X 6" aluminum alloy "bundcake alloys"

The alloys look like this and I believe would have been an option for a '69 model.

Hi Akulik,
Only 2 options, the hub cap and the original 14'/6" aluminium alloy  as joe previously posted. It was an option that was to be added for the 108 109 111 and 113 bodies.

This may be slightly off the topic, but is there such a thing as a 15 inch full wheel cover similar to the 14 inch one on the 280SL?

Hello Mike,

Yes, even if this is slightly off-topic, there are Mercedes 15" hubcaps around. Those were (are) used on the fireworks- and ambulance versions of the W 115 sedan and also on the W 100 (MB 600, Grand Mercedes, 1964-1981), at least during the later production years.

They're still factory-available, but I believe they're pricey now.

The original 14" (6J x 14 H) Mercedes bundcake aluminum rims have a 109 parts number; I believe 109 400 09 02 but I am not absolutely sure.
