Screws

As we all know, I have a couple loose. What's worse, I am actually missing some. For example, the tiny ones that hold on the inside front edge of the door chrome. Here's the question: If I take one I still have and plop it on a MBZ service counter, would they likely have it in stock? Or am I better off with a 113 vendor?

I usually pick up few when I visit our local Benz mechanic (Rick) and he gets them from the Benz dealership in Sacramento... I think.

Thanks Dick. I wonder about that Service Center in Rocklin? Very close to my work -- I may give them a shot as well. It's just that once before I tried to get a small part from them and they were really lost. Although the lady was impressed that I rattled off my VIN from memory (comes with the illness I'm afraid)...


Have your snow shoes on today? I sent my tach off yeaterday -- so as Dean Martin would say -- let it snow, let it snow, let it snow... then bring on the Spring!

Head down to your local Home Depot and look for small oval head stainless steel screws.  They look great.  Buff the head some and you will swear it's chrome.

I like the idea of the stainless screws.  They work and look very good.  I have replaced many of the screws on my  car with stainless screws that I was able to source locally.  I have been able to find most everything I  need at the local nuts and bolts store or at the local Lowes Store.  

One caveat.  Do not use stainless fasteners for high stress items like the front suspension.  Most stainless will stretch and/or break under severe loading.  You also need to use a thread locker to keep on stainless nuts and bolts to keep them from galling when tightening or loosening.

If however you are a stickler for originality, you may want to stick with your local MB dealer.  I have decided that with a few exceptions they are better sources for parts than many of the aftermarket vendors.  

As an example, i am rebuilding my hardtop and needed the 8 clips that hold the rear window molding in place.  Since I have had very good dealings on the many parts I have bought from Ray Paul, I gave him a call.  He informed that Buds Benz (his employer) had 13 in stock and that they were $0.60 each.  I ordered 8 clips and in a few days a small envelope arrived with the clips inside.  The bill was $4.80 for the parts and $10.00 for freight.  I do not know much about shipping but I thought $10.00 for a package that weighed maybe 4 oz. was high.  Whether it is too much or not, I am sure this experienced will weigh heavily on where I buy my next parts. If any way possible, I will buy from a place where I can walk in and look the  salesperson in the eye, and pay for the merchandise at the time of purchase.  

On another prior incident I stopped at a vendor and asked about some parts.  I was told "I do not have them in stock but I can get them and ship them to you.  They will be $2.00 or $3.00 dollars each.  Just leave your credit card number and I will ship them to you."  So I said OK.   Bad move on my part, when the parts arrived they were over $22.00 each.  To beat it all, when I called to ask if there was a mistake in pricing, the salesman would not even talk to me.  

Anyway,  these instances will have a great influence on where I buy parts from now on.

I bought the (aftermarket) chrome screw covers for my (early 250sl) internal door lock, 4 in total at USD $9.00 each from Ray Paul (SL Classics at the time).
The freight was USD $57.00 extra.

The items were the size of your thumb nail but when the parcel arrived it was the size of a foolscap folder. Apparently the minimum size the carrier would use.

He used the most expensive international freight carrier.

It would have been half the price if they used the US postal service.
However that would involve a staff member standing in a line. They passed the cost on to me.
It was much easier to use their usual carrier who has a pick up service.

The MB prices for these little items were quoted at AUD $110.00 each x 4=$440.00.

By the time the exchange rate was factored into the final price, I still saved AUD $300.00 which I used to buy other parts for the car, but not from Ray Paul.

The exchange rate is about $1 AU = $0.75 US.
Bob, it's ridiculous that MB wants $110 AU for 1 square centimetre of chrome!! Insulting almost.

There's a local hardware shop that I frequently visit whenever I need some type of screw.  The nice thing about it is you can buy 1 or more unlike most places where a customer has to buy a package.  I haven't had to buy any for the Pagoda but I did need one for my ML.  It was a license plate screw that was an exact match!  Their assortments of screws, nuts, bolts, washers etc.. is endless.

Rodd, I was talking about the international money exchange rate.
Americans have to suffer the same thing when buying in EUROS or GBP

Today the exchange rate for
AUD$1.00 = USD $0.7449

If I was buying in EUR or the GBP I would be worse off again.
AUD$1.00 = EUR 0.6184
AUD$1.00 = GBP 0.4244

These exchange rates are why I prefer to shop using USD.

DaveB, I agree with you about the parts price, hence the reason for buying parts from the USA.

Thanks all. I will try a marine supply store next. I tried a local hardware store -- they didn't have any as small as the ones I need. Believe it or not, there is not a Home Depot within 50 miles of here... Boonies I tell ya.

I am not about to spend a fortune on these, just for originality. And if anyone has a parts car, maybe you can mail me a few... (ooops,did I cross the forum line?)

I may have mislead you and others.  I did not mean to say or imply anything negative about Ray Paul.  He has been a great source of help and information for me and I believe many others.  He always does what he says and will call if he has any questions or changes in an order.  If Ray had control of the order all the way through shipping and billing, I would have NO qualms at all about ordering from him.

The parts I bought from Ray Paul were aftermarket and were sold for the price of USD $9.00 each + freight.

The genuine MB parts were quoted to me by my local Australian dealer at AUD $110.00 each

I should have explained the exchange rate this way
AUD $1.00 = 74.4 cents US currency

It has been a while since I saw you down here in the bay area.  If you want to go with stainless, check out http://totallystainless.net/totally.html they have a lot of interesting things.  Order a few extra door trim screws and you can sell them at a slight markup, I need some too!

Hello all,
I have a different type of screw(y) question. Where can one get the original T-clamps here in the US? Most of the clamps in my car are those (somewhat ugly) worm-screw type clamps and I thought of replacing them but haven't had much luck finding theT-clamps at the local Lowe's, Home Depot, or the True Value hardware chain.
Here is what the original clamps looked like (all 9 mm wide):

That's more of a Clamp question then a Screw question, but I believe the clamps in your sample auction are referred to as Norma clamps.
