Speaker Grill Cloth
« on: March 21, 2006, 11:07:27 »
Another detail question.  Did the center dash speaker have a cloth covering under the wood grill?  If so, wht kind of cloth, source, etc?

There is no cloth between the speaker & the wood grill. I have never seen any reference to a cloth in parts books.

My 250SL has a black cloth covering under the wooden grill.  I am sure it is original based on the condition and knowledge of the original owner (and many discussions).  I need to replace mine so I will be interested in hearing of sources.

A high end cabinet shop would be a great source for speaker cloth.  I'm sure finding a small remnant of the cloth would be simple.

My speaker has a metal grille over the top of the speaker.  On top of that, between the metal grille and the wood, is a fiber pad that looks a bit like filter media.  I would take pictures, but I don't have my digital camera available.  Also, my radio package is the period Blaupunkt Frankfurt, not the Becker.

Here is a picture of the metal grill and the location of the cloth.
It covers the openings on both sides but not the grill.  As Vince described it there is a thin sheet of fiber or polyfoam bewteen the metal grill and the wood to prevent small particles entering the speaker horn.
The speaker was installed together with a Becker Europa TR.

Like Vince Canepa's '67 250SL, my '66 230SL has the dealer installed Blaupunkt unit, including the same thin black filter-like pad between the metal speaker and wood grills.  Perhaps this came as part of the U.S. dealer installation kit?
