Glove Box Switch
« on: July 07, 2003, 17:12:37 »
Just got the car - a nice clean 65 230SL and I'm new to the forum.  First of many future questions - What is the funtion of the switch in the back of the glovebox.  It has a knob just like the other knobs on the dash, but seems to do nothing when I pull, push or turn it.  At first I thought it was an engine kill switch since it was locked in the glovebox, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  Admittedly, I haven't fully chased down the cable leading from the switch (as yet).

possibilities:

speaker fader?
air horn switch? (usually installed under steering column)
alarm system? (possibly no longer installed)
electric antenna?

What kind of switch is it? Can you share a photo?

Can't see the (a) switch.  Just a knob like the other dash knobs with a shaft attached which goes into the back of the glovebox.  I thought it was a standd equipment item, but your question leads me to think it's not.  Guess I'll have to trace it out.  Thanks

Is this a Euro car with rear fog lights or something we may not be familiar with on our US cars? Is the switch deeply dished with the same shape as the rest of the switches?  If not, I suspect some aftermarket tinkering.

Since this doesn't appear to be a standard item (this is not a Euro car, I'll chase it down and come back with the answer sometime in the next two days.  Yes - it is a switch just like all the others on the dash. Photo to follow - later.  Thanks for the info.

Mystery Solved.  Turns out it was a switch to run up the power antenna - which was inoperable.  Thanks for the support
