R/T Article from 1967
« on: May 18, 2006, 06:05:44 »
Check out ourSL.com's latest monthly newsletter.  They reprinted a Road and Track Article from 1967 from a 250SL owner.  It is really interesting to read this owner's perspective of his new 250SL.

I especially like him gripping about a $30 service charge as too expecnsive.  And the $98 he paid for a new exhaust system -- including new chrome tips.  How far we have come.

Ken,

If you like that article, you need to find the Brooklands Book on these cars. It gives you all the period reviews.

I did this modification back in 2003.  I had to add two wires to make the connection from the column switch back to the fuse that controls the high beams.  Longtooth and I explained how we each did back in July 2003; "highbeam flasher on column switch".  The color coded wiring diagram that came with the last copy of the Pagoda World should help see which wires need to be added and what colors.  I just added some wires that I had around.

Ron Wakefield was the Engineering Editor for R&T at the time.  He replaced the SL with a BMW 2800CS, then a 3.0CS.

As for the headlight flashers, I hooked them up on several US model SLs and sedans or the era.  On most of the ones I did the wire was disconnected at the fuse box and taped back. I simply reconnected the wire to the fuse box.

regarding the headlight flashers -  does that mean that you will disconnect the highbeam foot switch and move it to the column wiper switch?

The foot switch is left alone.  You are just completing a second line of power to the fuse that powers the high beam. The column switch has to be pulled and helded; it will not keep the high beam on.  The floor switch alternates between the high and low beam lights; the column switch will turn the high beam on while the low beam is on.
