Advice : 280 Sl exhaust manifold
« on: May 25, 2006, 09:05:02 »
Hi,

Does anyone know if a late 60's /early 70's 280 SE exhaust manifold will fit a 1970 280 SL? Can I weld it? Is it easy to take off and fit? Many thanks. Piers

Believe the 250/280 SE and SL manifolds are the same. They are different though for left and right hand drive cars.
Do you have casting numbers off your old ones?

Hello Piers,
Yes, Naj is correct they are exactly the same on a 250SE, or 280SE six cylinder injected sedans.

It is extremely difficult to weld exhaust manifolds. Repairs usually do not last.

If you need one of these manifolds, let me know; I have about 10+ sets of them lying around. Should not be that difficult to take off or put on.

How about for the 230SL?  Cees - I don't assume that one of the ten that you have would work on my RHD.

There was a noise in my gearbox. My mechanic dismantled it and told me that a few shafts and parts need to be replaced. Looked them up on SLS and these parts are really pricey and they add up fast.  Which leads me to the exhaust manifold. Costs about 2,000 euro on SLS so I'm wondering if there is a cheaper alternative.

Thanks again and happy chinese new year to all. Have a prosperous one!

Hello Erych,
Are you referring to the "steering gear box" or the "transmission gear box". The inexpensive alternative to new are good used sedan parts. These parts are shared with sedans of the era.

In regards to the manifolds, early versions 230SL had the welded pipe headers instead of cast iron manifolds like all the other W113 cars. The welded pipe headers are unique to these early 230SL's. Repair of these may be a bit easier since they are welded steel in the first place.  The common cast iron manifolds are not usually repairable. However they are the same on fuel injected sedans of the era and can found more easily used. You can change over the early header pipe manifolds to the cast iron style, but the engine front exhaust pipes would have to be changed also.

I will add my experience on the (attempted) repair of the cast iron manifolds. We tried three or four times, and each time ended up chasing the crack around the manifold pipes. No luck at all on this.

Thanks JA17 and Johnny B. I was referring to the transmission gear box.

Also, be aware that RHD manifolds and down pipes and not the same as LHD cars.
If you want to change to 250/280 cast iron manifolds, contact me off line.

Anyone know if this is an exhaust manifold?  Sorry for being so ignorant.

I read through this thread and saw that your 230sl has Right Hand Drive. The set in the picture are for a Left Hand Drive car made after mid 65. I imagine there would be a better chance of finding a used set in Asia, Australia, Brittan or a country where the cars are RHD.
I have only worked on one RHD Pagoda here in the USA, and that was so long ago that I don't remember the details other than the pipes dropped down in front of the subframe instead of by the starter motor like the ones on a LHD car.

Thanks a lot Al, for that.  I can sleep now.  Most likely will order new ones from SLS since my car has been with the garage for a long time.  I'm also ordering a lot of other parts from them so it's peace of mind for this novice.  But thanks for settling that query for me.

There are tricks to welding cast iron. My guy can weld wood to glass and he's fixed a number of manifolds for me.
