SORRY!!! I NEED TO PICK SOME BRAINS!!!
« on: June 06, 2006, 01:17:30 »
I'm sorry for bringing this to the table but i figure someboby might be able to give me some advice. i'm looking to replace or rebuild a transfer case in my 98 ml320. the whhels are locking up when i turn the steering wheel while driving. also there is a horrible grinding noise as the car jerks around like it's possessed. does anybody know where i can get a case fairly cheap? has anybody ever rebuilt one? know where i might be able to get a rebuild kit?
again thanks for your time.

65--if you are NOT a member of the MBCA with that lot in your stable, you ought to be.  If you were you'd get The Star and there are a bevy of late-model MB dismantlers and used parts suppliers that advertise every month.  There are far more ML's on the road then 113's.  I'm sure you could find a used transfer case.  Also, check the usual gang of aftermarket suppliers for rebuild kits.

Although not familiar with your particular situation, if I owned a '98 Mercedes Benz that gave me that kind of trouble and I thought little of it I would probably have to go ahead and SELL IT!

It sounds like a really dangerous problem!!

Has the local MB dealer given a quote between $4ooo and $8ooo yet?
Wish I could help, but I don't know. I've never owned a modern MB.

Do you have stock wheels and tires?  I have noticed with full time all wheel drive like my Audi it complains a little if I crank the wheel all the way over, but it doesn't buck or grind.

I have a '99 Ml and haven't experienced anything like that so far.  Other than going through three fuel sending units a harmonic balancer and a couple other problems (all covered by MBUSA) it's been a decent car.

Have you tried getting an answers or solutions from Benz World?

Hello 65,
If I was you I would call Potomac German Motors in Maryland, (largest MB recycling operation in US). I am sure they have a couple dozen or more wrecked MLs. If you live within driving distance, pick the part up yourself and save. They use to have $99.00 days during which you pay $99.00 for anything you could carry out!! I don't know if they do this anymore.

It is an amazing operation. I am sure they have a web site, or you can phone and they ship worldwide. I don't know how there prices are on this kind of item. I have a friend who makes pilgrimages there several times a year. He always brings back a truck full of unusual goddies for modern Mercedes cars.
