Which new Engine for my 280SL 1969 Pagode?
« on: June 10, 2006, 03:35:26 »
Hello everyone,

I would like to know which engine would you recommend to put my 1969 280SL Pagode. I'm thinking about some recent engine, year 2000 and above but i'm not able to choose the right one. It would be easier to implement an A/C with automatic trasmission on this model..

Please telle me, which one would you recommend?

Regards!

wow, this should be interesting! i know it's not that new but my 94 e320 wagon amazes me every day. that engine has been great to me. it has tons of power and is super reliable. it runs like a brand new car and it has almost 300k miles on it! i don't know how hard that swap would be but i can only imagine my pagoda with that engine eating porsches  for lunch!
good luck!

That's really nice NAJ!! They made an amazing job on these cars! Eventhough I don't know how much mechatronik charges to restore the car, I would prefer to do it myself! :)

Would you recommend any specific engine ? A C-Class 240 engine year 2000 maybe?

I would really appreciate your help! Thanks again!

The first one they did was with a 280 V6 engine/gearbox out of a C Class. There is an article about it in one of the Mercedes Enthusiast magazines

The mechatronik website and cars are very interesting. I can imagine it is a real performer.

Anyway, I vote that you use a recently rebuilt M130 engine or otherwise correct w113 chassis engine with the A/C and autotransmission, instead of an incorrect engine. The next owner should appreciate that course more.

Bigstar,

One of the nice improvments of the Mechatronik car is that the A/C is integrated into the dash and there is no Frigiking unit to hang down from the dash.  Also, the 5 speed transmission is mated to the V6 and is quite nice.  Heated seats, automatic windows, etc. don't hurt either and the audio system is strong.  I have driven 2 of the Mechtronik cars and they have figured out how to update the classic to a fully functional modern car while retaining the overall look and feel of the original (until you open the hood).

Best,

Tom

Tom,

The cars that Mechatronik did are really nice.

I would like to put a recent reliable engine in my car that would allow me to install an A/C system with an automatic transmission.

Naj said that they used a C-Class V6 280: Would it fit easily under the hood? is there enough space for it? is there any special trick or recommendation to know? What about the modification that should be made on the chasis?

Which engine do you personnally advice me to install? The most reliable and easy one to install?

Thanks!

Chad

Bigstar:

It's definitely an interesting question and something many of us would find interesting to follow the course/success of.  Maybe a lot of us here don't have much experience with transplanting alternative powerplants in these cars. The other Benz forums may have a lot more to say... but definitely if you get info somewhere else and press forward with this project, please return here and let us know the progress and pictures. Pics are great!!  It might make for a good Pagodaworld article. Those mechatronik cars are very interesting. I'd love to drive one.  Right now I do prefer my old manual 4speed no AC M127 powered 230 though.
