Rodd,
I have installed a program that e-mails users who have not been on the site for a long period. I notify them that if they do not revisit the site, their membership will be pruned (prior to archiving of messages). This is to reduce the space used in the database, and to keep our user base realistic. If you visit the site occasionally (say at least once a year) you'll never receive such a notification.
I started off mailing all those users that had not visited us over 1000 days (3 years or so), then archived them after a while. Then 900 days, 800 and so on. I'm at 600 now and will stop at 500 days -- and will repeat that every quarter or so.
As you can imagine, many of these e-mails never arrive... people have moved on, changed their e-mail address. I also know that many of the less active people have forgotten their log-on details and reregistered, some of them 4 times. These all get pruned.
A Dalton's record stuck out, since he had a 1000 posts. All the others had maybe a couple, perhaps 10 or 20, most of them had 0 posts. I then looked for A Dalton's last post, and it was in this thread. I then saw that his message about the 1000th post was indeed the last post, and in fact almost the last visit he paid to the board.
I've since exchanged e-mails with him. He's moved on, and no longer interested in this board. Since people would like to see his name on posts, I've changed his "last visited" date to today in the database, so that he will not get pruned (for another 500 days, that is).
