Is there anyway to print out all 1,ooo posts in a unique section - as an archive of mechanical pearls of wisdom?!

1. Log into the Forum
2. Click on Dalton's ID
3. Below the space that shows his total number of posts, click on the small words, "Find all non-archived posts by A Dalton".  That will open all the threads that A. Dalton has posted in.
4. Open the first thread.
5. Click on the "Printer Friendly" link to open a new window.
6. Click on Print Page.
7. Repeat for every thread!

And now that we are on the subject, I suggest the same (find and print) procedure for the posts made by Joe Alexander, Dan Caron and you can probably name a few more favorites.

Well,

here is your friendly admin speaking. I just spent 5 minutes and wrote a database query that extracts all posts from a specific member out of the database. Regrettably you lose the context, formatting and layout and pictures if included (that would be a lot harder to do).

However, if someone would like to receive a copy of a 189 page document containing all 1000 posts of A Dalton, send me your mail address and I'll wing it your way! Obviously, I can do the same for Joe A, Dan C and any other members you'd care to mention such as Cees K.

Cees,

You just thought I could not do it, he?

This is a collection of all of Joe Alexanders posts. The Topic is the orginal Topic Message. Reply is the reply Joe submitted. I can provide a text version of this info also for easy searching or other processing, although Acrobat Reader allows you to search through this also.

Have fun. For Joe Alexander it amounts to 1134 pages. Download it by right-clicking on the following link and selecting "Save Target As" http://www.sl113.org/Joe_Alexander.pdf. You can then read it at your leisure on your own PC using Acrobat Reader.

Note: it is 2.23MB big. Don't do this if you are on a dial-up link!

Note: No longer available, as it's out of date...

I'm clearly spending too much time messing with this site and databases to post... I'll never ever achieve 1000 posts at this rate!

What's really interesting... or sad, is that I noticed (as I am cleaning up the membership database) that this was also "A Dalton"'s last post, and indeed last visit to the website (10th of june 2006).

Anyone know what's happened to him? Has he reregistered under a different name ? Is he racking up another 1000 posts ? Did he decide a 1000 was enough ?

I need to know soon, as he's one of the people that's likely to become anonymous at the next prune, and all his posts will be marked "N/A".

Arthur Dalton is still active on another Mercedes forum  http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/index.php  , as it seems his interest is more on current models. He is often the last word on this forum, mostly because he has the right answer.  But I have also wondered why he left this board.

Best,

Peter, I don't know how many times I've used the search feature with A Dalton as the member.  I would hate to see it go away.  I feel his contributions to this group are extremely valuable.

I received a mail from him that he's not interested in renewing... however, I can sort of fake it so that the system thinks he logged in today. That way he won't be deleted for at least another year or two. Then I -- or my successor -- will need to remember to do this again...

Rodd,

I have installed a program that e-mails users who have not been on the site for a long period. I notify them that if they do not revisit the site, their membership will be pruned (prior to archiving of messages). This is to reduce the space used in the database, and to keep our user base realistic. If you visit the site occasionally (say at least once a year) you'll never receive such a notification.

I started off mailing all those users that had not visited us over 1000 days (3 years or so), then archived them after a while. Then 900 days, 800 and so on. I'm at 600 now and will stop at 500 days -- and will repeat that every quarter or so.

As you can imagine, many of these e-mails never arrive... people have moved on, changed their e-mail address. I also know that many of the less active people have forgotten their log-on details and reregistered, some of them 4 times. These all get pruned.

A Dalton's record stuck out, since he had a 1000 posts. All the others had maybe a couple, perhaps 10 or 20, most of them had 0 posts. I then looked for A Dalton's last post, and it was in this thread. I then saw that his message about the 1000th post was indeed the last post, and in fact almost the last visit he paid to the board.

I've since exchanged e-mails with him. He's moved on, and no longer interested in this board. Since people would like to see his name on posts, I've changed his "last visited" date to today in the database, so that he will not get pruned (for another 500 days, that is).

Not important but I see this all over the place and on other sites as well. It could also be called ' the forum ' but it's certainly not the board which would indicate some sort of office or voting options.

This type of website is often referred to as a message board.

...or a Discussion Board, or even earlier, a Bulletin Board.

This terminology goes back (at least) to the pre-Internet days of dial-up systems and BBSes.  A BBS was typically a server with a bank of modems connected to phone lines sharing a single phone number, and was properly called a Bulletin Board System.  BBSes provided many of the services that we now get from the Web, including company tech support and software distribution, as well as community discussions like our board (not to be confused with our Board  ;) ).
