John,
Haynes manual #346 is a good start for a 250/280sl
If its a 230, try Mercedes-Benz 230 1963-68 manual republished by Veloce Press Int. Originally it was an Autobooks manual.
Try Amazon.co.uk or velocepress.com.
The BBB (Big blue book) by Mercs. are a bit more difficult to come by, especially the early 230 book.
Happy hunting!

You will also need the MB Spare Parts Book.  There is one for the 230SL and one for the 250SL/280SL.  I bought mine from the MB Classic Center in Germany, but I found out later that I could have used my local dealer.

I purchased the Haynes manual (ISBN 0 85696 346 1) through Borders for about $19. This covers 230, 250, 280 68 through 72, but really helps with all the model years. I also found the BBB through books4cars.com. They have a lot of different stuff. The Mercedes Classic center is also a great resource. I am going to buy the parts book through them.

Rodd, I tried using the Classic Center part numbers for the books and my dealer says they are no good. Does yours, (and should they), start with letters instead of all numbers?

I was at the Pittsburgh Vintage GP this weekend and picked up a list from the MB rep. All the titles on this list begin with QL, this list only shows the 280SL book as QL6510 1404 02 for US$108.99. It does list the spare parts book for each type 113, as well as the parts catalogues.
