Ebay bidding

Ebay bidding seems pretty strange oftentimes.

Can anyone explain to me what is special about this NEW part (ivory colored shift knob) that is different from the same part that can be ordered over the phone from MB or SLS for about $75 or $55 respectively, I believe?  What am I missing that these bidders understood?

One month ago a friend of mine bought one for $100 over ebay.
He thought that the manual knobs do not exist with the dealers.

It was the heat of wining that got him into high biding frenzy
When the bid was over he looked he realized that he did a mistake.

The story ended in a TRAGEDY. When he got the knob after
one month of wait he wanted to fit it into the shift stick and
it did not go in. Then he pushed it hard and it split into two.
It seems that it was a old-new and he ended up buying one from
the dealer after I told him where to get it.

A while back I was looking for a white knob for my automatic (w/o the shift pattern) and it was pretty hard to find while those with the shift pattern seemed to be more readily available.

I did find the a/t version at Van Dijk http://www.classicsl.com/ in the Netherlands.

Perhaps people think that few parts for these cars can be found from factory or equivalent sources??  And search eBay in response.  Many parts are easily available for a price, it's what makes me like the car.  Ebay is certainly the market for various NLA parts, which are somewhat few. Anyway, if it can be found from a reputable vendor then I always pay the price for the sure thing -- or as close to the sure thing as possible.

An ivory A/T shift knob just on ebay this weekend for about $20.00. Of course it showed up about a day after mine came in from SLS for about $55.00!
