250SL trans
« on: July 05, 2006, 17:32:30 »
Does anyone have a 250SL auto trans with converter they don't need? I seem to have a car here that has nothing at all. I can't remember if the 250 and 280 are the same or if one has a fluid coupling or not.
Some people tell me they're the same and some say they're differnt. Maybe the oil pan on the trans???

Hello Dan,
I believe they are the same in function and appearance. The early units were taged GA230SL-E and the later GA280SE both were the K4A 025 units. The only difference seems to be a slight difference in internal working pressure 2.6 as opposed to 3.2. The books show a slight difference in the flyweights of the governor.  Many of the early W108 sedans and finbacks also used this unit up until May 1969 when the sedans were changed to the newer design. As you probably know, the W113 used the older K4 025 until the end of their production.

Now I cannot remember if the bolt configuration of the converter/flywheel connection are the same? Seems like one has four bolts and the other has six?

This one has six. I think that cars with carbs had four and the converters may be different as well.

Doc If your looking for a core, I have the trans from my 68 250SL parts car, I say core because The car has not been driven for over 10 years and I have no idea if the trans works.
