You know, I'm not sure what you guys are looking at, but my shaft has a C-clip where 49er's looks like an O-ring.

John,
this is a black DIN7993 snap ring or circlip with a round cross section that can be mistaken for an O-ring. 49er's is most likely correct, but it is difficult to see.
We are not looking at that one but at #25 in the parts graphic.
