Windshield Pillar rail

Can anyone advise whether there is supposed to be a pad, seal or packing between the Windshield Pillar rail and the Pillar or is it mounted metal to metal. There is a small pad at the top which fills an indent which I have but nothing along the whole length. The parts manual (item 90) doesn't make it very clear.

For clarity I am referring to the rail in which the door window seal between the pillar and the window is mounted. When I removed the rail it had been sandwiched with mastic.

Thanks in advance

Rocket.

When I removed mine it had glue that looks like carpenters caulk, just like the stuff they use in heavy doses when installing the chrome alone the leading edge of the hardtop.
