helping a friend sell a 69 280sl
« on: December 05, 2006, 12:21:18 »
Hey, I registered here to get some opinions of what this car should/will sell for. The friends who own this car are my landlords, who are good family friends. They're not the greatest with ebay and the likes and any other online selling methods, so they enlisted in my services.

On to the car-

1969 Mercedes 280SL
~40k Miles
White, convertible top
No rust, adult owned and driven.
To be mint, the interior could use a re-upholstering, and it needs a new top. I see this as being quite acceptable given the year and the car being completely original.

I checked out the similar models on ebay, and I see them going for around 20k at a quick glance. Just from the quick look that I took, i'm going to say that the one i'm dealing with is in better condition, and is also lower mileage than the ones available on ebay.

What should I expect to see if I throw it up on ebay? Would there be anyone on this forum that might take interest in it and pay the kind of money that we are expecting to get out of this car?

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

I'm sure you'll see some interest here, Joe. Where's the car located?

Joe,

Hi.  These two points are often big problems between sellers/buyers.  First, the milage will have to be confirmed by paperwork.  That is, when regular maintenance or other repairs were done, the owner hopefully kept the receipts with service dates & odometer information included.  Second, no rust is a very big claim, considering rust can be hiding under carpeting, behind rocker panels, inside frame rail and firewall box sections, etc....  To say a car has NO rust is a very big claim that can be defeated most often with very detailed inspection.

I recommed you share the location of the vehicle with us (just the city/state, not the address!) and maybe we can help you find a local expert to help the owner appraise the car for appropriate sale.

the car is located in red wing, minnesota.  i havent closely inspected the vehicle myself, only seen it when at their house on occasion.  it's kept inside what used to be a barn, turned into more of a storage/game room, and as far as i know has never seen a winter.  on tuesday (next week) i'll be heading out to his house to check it out, help clean it up some, and get some detailed pictures.

what areas should i get pictures of that'll help sell?  if anyone in the general area wants to come and check it out, i'm sure we'd be fine with it if we dont have anything planned for the given day.

Joe, when you inspect, run your fingers under the fenders forward where the headlight bucket attaches. Clean the top of that headlight bucket and look for rust. You'll need a flashlight and a mirror. Another spot is under the rocker panels. You really have to remove the sheet metal cover. Another spot to look is the floor of the trunk under the rubber mat and inside the hat section beam under the trunk floor. It has one inch access holes thru which you can insert a small mirror. It's been my experience that only California cars have very little rust.

If you want to pay someone to give it an apprasial, I'm sure John Olsen would provide that service.

Alright guys.  I just got back from the owners house.  I have with me 55 pictures of the mercedes.  Its still stored away back in the ol' barn, so I wasn't able to get all the pictures that I wanted to.  It still looks rather dirty, but it's also been stored back there for god knows how many years.  With a good wash, shine and wax, and a full detail by a detail shop, it would look much better than it does.  I've been shining and waxing my vehicles since I was 15 years old, and I can tell that a lot of the little marks on the paint will easily come out with some work.

As far as I can tell, there really ISN'T any rust.  I haven't had a chance to check every tiny little crevice that has been suggested that I check, but the areas that I looked, there wasn't any rust.  Once it's pulled out, and taken care of, i'm intending on re-inspecting every dirty little crack.

The mileage is also higher than I was told.  The spedo reads 7xxxx, all I looked at was the first digit.

I was also told a little more about the vehicle history.  The owner doesn't have documentation of the mileage, but we're suspecting some of it can be found by tracing the VIN number.  (it should have one, correct?)  At very MOST, he is the third owner, but is pretty sure he is second.  He purchased it from an individual in Florida who had it stuffed away in (I believe he said) a show room.

I've uploaded every hi-res picture I took to an album on photobucket.  The link:  http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o185/joegibs_mercedes/

Any questions about any picture or particular, or anything else, feel free to post, i'll check back regularly.

LMAO!  That's hilarious, me and the owner were discussing how we knew SOMEONE would be asking exactly that.  Every thing's for sale for the right price.

Joe,

These cars dont like to sit and many times have more problems when they come out of storage than when they went in. A couple of things working against the car here is that you can't see underneath the car (to REALLY figure out if there is "no rust" or not) and whether it is drive-able or not. Lets face it, we are interested in these cars for their style and timelessness, but they are mechanical things and if the mechanics aren't right, you really can't calculate a value. IMHO there's alot more due-diligence to be done here. Unfortunately, you can't get CARFAX mileage info for cars of this vintage. In addition, my car has 135,000 miles and has less wear on the brake pedal!

Kevin

PS: It seems that the previous owner(s) was a left-foot braker.

I would have to agree with KevinC about the miles. In my humble opinion, the car has lots of miles.  Rust showing in the engine area probably signals rust in other areas.  Trunk looks rough.  Interior is well worn.  Someone really enjoyed the car.

Why not put it on Ebay and let the market provide some feedback?  Would not hurt.  My guess is $14-18k.  Without maintenance records, I would assume all suspension and rubber needs to be done, as well as brakes.  Sitting around may require fuel system redo-removing tank, new lines and maybe a FI pump rebuild.  Cooling system overhaul.  My guess on the mechanicals assuming minimal maintenance over time would be $6-10k.  If there is real rust-it would likely not be worth preservation.

Best,

Tom
