Wow. That really takes the cake. It doesn't take Einstein to see that the photos are from two different cars. But I sure like looking at yours, Terry! Thanks for the heads up.

You should go to the "ask seller a question" link and ask why there are two different cars in the photos.
It will show up whether the seller wants it there or not,

Hello Everyone,

My guess is you don't see these eBay "scams" for Triumph TR6's, MG Midgets, Fiat Spyders, etc.  The scam artists have latched onto the popularity of the W113, and they know it--which is why these things keep popping up.  Because of the popularity of our cars, many want to see high prices--to see the value of their own car increase, but also are looking for the proverbial "great deal" which hardly exists except in scam form!

Well, Terry has hit the nail on the head: NEVER, NEVER BUY A CAR ON EBAY WITHOUT A FULL INSPECTION!!

I funded my 250SL and 560SL purchases from selling a lot of high end vintage photography equipment.  Over the past year, I have caught many scammers using my photos and have enjoyed nailing them.  Sometimes, I will post a duplicate ad to theirs and ask $1M.  I would then point out the other listing as phoney.  I received a few death threats from scammers for trying to slander them.  Most were from Eastern Europe.  I also received many e-mails, thanking me for outing the scammers! It cost me a few bucks per listing, but I have so much fun with it!  Plus, I saved many people from being taken.

Terry...I would nail that SOB for using my photos!  By the way, nice firewall pad!  Did you restore it or get one of Tom's?

"You should go to the "ask seller a question" link and ask why there are two different cars in the photos.

WRONG!!! EVERY SINGLE LINK ON THE EBAY (SCAM) LISTING GOES DIRECTLY TO THE SCAMMER!! IF YOU TRY TO REPORT THE FRAUD, IF YOU ASK THE SELLER A QUESTION ETC. ETC.  THE SCAMMER KNOWS!!!  IN MY OPINION, EBAY HAS DEGRADED BECAUSE OF FRAUD TO A SITUATION WHERE IT IS LIKE THE WANT ADS IN A NEWSPAPER. NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS. I THINK EASILY 10% OF ALL THE LISTINGS FOR CARS ARE BOGUS!!

I think he has an old rusted dirty signal red 113 , ctured in the first pic and if you look at the engine bay pics one has half a fireall pad and interstate battery), I'm sure the interior shots and trunk etc show much better on your car!  Someone will buy this and get a rusty dirty tired 113, thinking its in concours shape

My first thought was that we don't know if the seller even owns a 280 SL at all, but I've got to think you're correct, Peter. If there were no car at all, why even bother showing the tired SL in some pix? Why not just show the nice one?

This is one of the oddest scams I've seen on ebay. It's like a half-baked bait-and-switch.

I guess all we can hope is the bidders will get wind of our discussion before its too late. The seller could always claim he was just showing what the car could look like with some major TLC...

I reported this to Ebay fraud (there is a link at the bottom of the listing that allows you do report suspected fraud).  I expect it will get pulled today?

Thanks,

eBay will not accept responsibility for this type of listing. They say it is the buyers' responsibility to check the seller out.

When I was scammed for AUD $1500.00 while trying to buy a soft top frame, I checked every link for security, insurance etc on the eBay site. They all went to the correct eBay site.
How can you rely on the veracity of the information if all the links can be diverted to the shonky seller?
It seems to me that eBay website software is too easily copied.

This is truly ironic that Terry stumbled onto this.

However, I would say that ebay does more for our passion than harm by stimulating demand.  But...with all things in life - let the buyer beware!

I had a good experience finding my w113 on ebay.   However, I used ebay like a catalog, engaged an inspector and then got in the car to drive 200 miles to see it.   I had negotiated a price on the phone, but reduced the final price 20% upon inspection.   I drove it home that day in 90 degree heat with no air conditioning!

Overall, I liked my experience and would do it again.

I bought two cars over eBay and got them shiped to Dubai. But all done with a friend of mine living in the US. I would check the car over the Internet talk to the owner and then ask my friend to see the car and inspect it and make sure that all ownership documents are proper. I would even send the money to my friend to pay the owner - never transfer the money directly to the buyer.

Terry,

Looks like your car is fetching a nice price, too bad the new owner will never see it.  Despite having reported this the scam goes on.  I really feel badly for the high bidder.

Chances are pretty good the vehicle will still be available after the auction, so I wouldn't feel too bad for the high bidder. It's probably the seller's alter ego.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

You may have noticed that this listing is removed.  I did this.  I logged onto "my eBay" (I usually sell my daughter's cast off toys etc.); and reported the item to eBay Safe Harbor Department.  In this way the communication went to them and not to the seller.

When we uncover these frauds, this is the way to do it.  Don't try and report it when you have the listing on display; do it from "my eBay" if you are a registered user, if not have someone else who is a registered user do it.  I did this last night after reading Terry's post again.

So, the system does work, you just have to know how to use it!
