Chrome Grill
« on: January 02, 2007, 03:39:06 »
Hi folk,
The horizontal chrome piece on the front grill is held in place by a nut and bolt arrangement.

The nut on the injection pump side of the grill has come loose. It is very difficult to access.

Can someone tell me if the bolt is held in place so that it doesn't rotate while adjusting the nut.

I tried using a socket without much luck and normal spanners are out of the question.

Surely I don't have to remove the front grill to do up that nut???

any advice welcomed

thanks

It looks like you wont be able to do any thing about it by just turning the screw. Take the grill out and replace the nut and bolt. There is only 8 screws to take the grill out and you can pull the whole grill out and you can replace or just tighten the screws. I suggest to replace all screws .

Bob, Not much there to do, unless you have the very tiny open and close ended wrenches.  I wouldn't worry too much about it till you are ready to take the grille out like Babak says.  To get to the nut from behind means the black aluminum screen needs to come out.  Not worth the effort.  The grille removal is the easiest.
Babak, the grille has special chrome plated screws with sunk washers also chrome plated to complete the chrome look of the grille.
Happy New year to all.

If my recollections service me there are eight counter sunk screws and washers the hold the the outer part of the grill to the nose section. two bolts the hold the barrel and star and one screw each the attache the center wings to the barrel.
I do not understand what it is that is loose on your grill. All these screws with the exception of the center barrel bolts and side wing fixturess are exsisible to tighted while fixed to the nose.
These are small self threading screws and they go into the nose section of the car. Unless they have been striped or over tighted then a carefull snugging with aphilips screw drive is all that is need to snug them up again and hold the grill in place.

Thanks for the replies.

I will have a closer look on the weekend because I don't want to loose that nut and have the chrome piece flopping about and getting out of shape. I imagine they cost an arm and a leg to replace.

Bob G,
I asked about a nut that holds the end of the horizontal centre piece to the outer chrome rim which is held to the body.    The pic shows the general location of the nut.

Well I couldn't wait.

I drilled out the 2 pop rivets I had installed as security against having the front grill stolen.
The remaing screws were easy to remove.

The nut was easy to adjust.

I took the opportunity to polish the chrome and clean the internal area behind the grill.
It looks fabulous! does anyone still use that word??

Thanks for the advice.

Probably not, but I did that some years ago because a poster on the yahoo site had been visiting a friend or a restaurant and when he returned the front grill was missing. There was quite a hubub about security at the time.
As I drive my car almost anywhere, I took the precaution of not tempting fate.
