Magic Barn ... Magic bag

I have a friend of mine who used to own 5 Pagoda SLs two years ago. He sold 4 of them and kept the fifth. He thought that if he kept them all he will die trying to keep them well ... life is too short.
However he was left with a "magic barn" full of spare parts that he accumulated throught the years. You name it ... he has it: 4 radios, firewall, extra hardtop, engine parts, old bumbers, interior parts ...

I entered the "heaven" of Pagoda last year and have just started collecting spares ... I only have a small "magic bag" with few front axel linkages, a pair or rear shocks, and and extra oil and fuel filter.
 
  What have you accumulated throughout the years? It would be interesting to know. I guess we value our spares well and we smile everytime we find an item in our "magic barn" when we need it most! and right a way we replenish our inventory when one item is used.

So far I've managed to collect plenty of bills, although I do have a spare license plate light bulb (they came in packs of 2). Not quite a barn yet, more of a match box.

Because I liked the overhauling work on my engine (that actually Joe Alexander did and I assisted with, back in 2003 in Ohio) so much, I subsequently have collected 14 other spare engines to recondition once I retire (I am 46 today, so it's a while away still).
Other spare parts (not counting the FI pumps, starters, distributors, manifolds etc etc that came attached to the 14 engines) I have collected over the 7 years I own my Pagoda include extra wiper arms, a rearview mirror, used hubcaps, US bumper overriders - really not all that much, come to think of it!

When I worked on these cars I would save take off parts from sl's that were still useable and some that weren't for pieces I may need later and have some other parts that I have no idea where or how I got them.

Including:
dozens of injector nozzles, fuel accumulator, late style fuel pump, a box of broken combi switches both early and late, electrical swithces, relays and vacuuim controlls many for applications that I don't remember, door latches and strikers, broken window regulators, a gallon bucket full of window guides, tail light back plates (no lenses)  3 left side door sill trim strips, 5-14" wheel trim rings, hard top window seals, 6-soft top foam strips for over the door windows, 3-distributors, about a dozen old horns(none that match each other)rear brake drums some are aluminum, keys and lock tumblers, Kangol seat belts, 2 Becker Mexico radios, a Km/h speedo(SEC?), and metric instrument pod, rocker arms, valve train pieces, motor antennas, a right hand door mirror (early style), glove box light, and an extra thermo king evaporator unit. and more that I havnt sorted through yet.

A 3 car garage that has many parts for the SL's hanging on the walls, an attic with many more parts, including a top frame, hardtop, glass for hardtop, trims(maybe 3 or 4 sets), rubber, steering wheels, seats, rims, headlights, instruments, dash trims, trunk lid, case cover, etc..
Not to mention the literature and toy cars and suitcases full of emblems, clocks, etc..
That's my place to go if I feel sad or had a rough day.  Simply playing with the parts and looking over the literature always brightens my day.

Garage shmarage. My spare parts are all "attached" together over a rusty hunk of metal some folks call a "chassis". Sometimes I even roll it around for fun....

I keep my cars well-behaved with the usual threat: "you're one blown-head-gasket away from a dismantler!"  Keeps them in line  :)

Cees, I hope you venture every year into Perfect Pagoda Paradise(PPP) and squirt oil into the plug holes of each of those engines and turn them over.   Similar care to the other parts.  I know JA does the same  with all his treasures!

You guys are lucky.  I haven't been able to contain my hording to just one marque... in addition to the SL, my garages are  filled with parts for a corvette roadster, Jag saloon, Ferrari coupe, and Porsche, as well as left-overs from many past follies.  I'm thinking at some point I'll combine all these components into one, good, reliable Chevy.

Accumulating stuff is probably par for the course. I have a spare cylinder head and a new 09 cam I plan to install. I do have a spare distributor. Even acquired an original spare tire: Continental with the rub strip. The oil change tool and the trouble light that plugs in the socket near the engine. Sadly to report, our famous junk Jard, Benz Friendz, had to vacate their premises. The property values have risen so much that developers are paying outrageous prices for old buildings in this town. Most of the old Mercedes cars did go to the recycling heaven. I got so many parts there. Little wavy washers that were no longer available and all the old hose clamps. Even an asperical, genuine Mercedes mirror that, I believe, came from an old 600. They had aluminum wheels for Mike Salemi and hubcaps for me. All gone!

Oh Lordy. Aside from all the spare parts (including a new soft top, several side mirrors, etc.) Carling's seller shipped in the boot, does anyone need 4 original XKE Series II wheels?  Don't start me!  With 7 old cars, we have parts no one's ever heard of.  Heck, we've never heard of them  ;)   They are somewhere under the detritis of the last cars that left.  Oh, and now I have an old Boxer to take care of...

Finally got so fed up of keeping 5 pagodas going, and my favourite of them was the only one not being looked after, that i sold 4. Felt good, loads of garage space,loads of storage space in the cellar, i could concentrate on getting my remaining cars up to scratch. Oh no, i was just looking on the web when for some unexplained reason i bought a 600 grosser from australia with the money. Didnt get it checked out so guess who has bought the worlds largest turkey for christmas
