Finally, my 230sl
« on: January 12, 2007, 06:43:52 »
Last year, for MLK day, I dropped off my 230SL shell to a body shop with a great reputation for doing a show quality car (Gustafson's in Hatboro, PA).  I asked them to make all the rust disappear and give me back perfect paint.

This MLK day (that's this coming Monday), I get the car back.  Of course, it will be raining, so I may hold off a day, but it's finally time to start a thread for the girl.

The down side to starting with a shell that was given to you with all the parts in boxes, is that it's a large jigsaw puzzle.  The 230SL parts book on hand is nice to help with what parts should be on hand, but not with where the part goes on the car (and it doesn't tell you what box the PO put them in, where you put that box).

So, I got lucky and found another car. This new one is more ratty, but it was about 2 miles down the road and precisely the same color.  I call it a good omen (or a case of insult added to injury of the pocket book).

Details on the pretty shell to come, but here's the 2nd one

- It runs, though it has a bearing noise.
- This one's an automatic with US lights; the other is a standard with euro lights.
- The hub caps are the wrong color white; these cars are DB158.

Just courious,  what does a 'ratty' car like that go for now days.   I'd love to find one for a project.   Or just keep it from going to the dump.

Charles,
Look like we both belong to a small group of discoverers.
Just like archeologists discovering the lost relics out there.
For those who want to get a better idea of this fever of discovery, can I recommend a book called "The Cobra in the Barn".  It's a neat collection of rare and common car discoveries.
I've found several cars of mine just like this, not far from my home.
Walter
1967 220SL-diesel- also found(thru a friend)in derelict condition.
The one on Ebay is selling for a good price, but look at the other items he's selling-presto the hardtop is in there too.

last weekend I got to see the car.
Man-o-man it's lovely with all that fresh paint. So much so, that I chose not to collect it and trailer it home in the open air.

Now, to find somebody to carry it enclosed and pay the piper.

Some before and after pictures...
  http://picasaweb.google.com/cth350/230sl

First thing to notice is that it's painted the wrong color.  Oops.
Vexing perhaps, but I like it anyway.

I figured I'd start at the rear and reassemble all the trunk related bits, since it's the first thing I see when I open the garage door.

So, I whip out the brand new trunk seal that came with the car and try it on for size.  And of course, it's my first hurdle.  What should the seal look like when it's properly mounted. Anybody have a really nice and correctly mounted seal?  I need to see pictures of the four corners.

I purchased a 2nd car to use as a model.  It has a trunk seal, but I don't think it's mounted at all correctly.

Thx -CTH

So nobody's replaced a trunk seal in recent memory?  Hmm. -CTH

Well, I replaced mine but I don't think (my mechanic, actually) got it quite right. It's a little tricky. There is specific angle at which it needs to sit -- where it sheds the water but doesn't interfere with the closing of the lid. Mine seems to be a little over-turned -- it keeps water out but is visible with trunk closed. I am hesistant to use mine as a good example.

You described my problem pretty well actually. My 2nd car has the seal done "wierdly".    Next! ;)  -CTH

Actually, I did search for "trunk seal". I missed the little button on the right that said "4 Pages".

What I wanted was on page 2...

The whole thread is a good read...

Now, to go finish assembling the trunk.
