I bought these top handles on ebat thinking they were the same as my 280SL. They arrived today and are quite a bit bigger but the same shape. any ideas?

The zink plated handles are for a W107 hard top. They are used for both the front and rear latches.
There was a 6 cylinder 280 version of the 107 that wasn't imported to the USA.

I have a pair of handles like that. Mine are 5 1/2 inches long and came with the car. I also have a pair of smaller ones, 4 5/8 long, chrome plated in a black plastic pouch. Until now, I never noticed the difference in length. I have tried all of them and found that the pair of custom handles I made from galvanized steel fit better. They have an offset that clears the wood frame better. Just my 2 cents worth.

I think Al wins the prize. It makes sense that these would be 107 hardtop handles. The zinc plating and the rough finish would suggest something that was only intended for occasional use.

I was looking for some handles to use in my car so I could keep the good expensice ones from being stolen. These fit the bill perfectly.

What you got are a pair of old hardtop release handles from a R 107 SL. the orginal handles for our cars are shorter and real chrome with a small black bag. I have seen them for $150.00 and up for sale. Daimler Chrysler no longer makes the orginal ones but you can get R-107 handles in chrome from Buds Benz ,Performance Products and the classic center in the USA. About $40.00 new
