No the parts are not available for the 5-speed anymore, at least that's the story bantered about.

NOTICE that BIDDER_3 is the high bidder this morning. Hmmm...wasn't this the same bidder that may have pumped up the price of the last fraud we all talked about? And, as if that wasn't enough, I was trolling around for some camera equipment and sure enough, on a no-reserve auction for older and expensive Leica equipment, there was Bidder 3 again!

I can't think of a more laughable fraud then eBay sellers avoiding the reserve fee or the listing fee starting point then having a friend in this mysterious Bidder_3, with his cousins, Bidder_1, Bidder_2, and the rest of the Bidder clan.

Bidder_1, etc is the new format that Ebay uses now to keep bidder identities anonymous. There is a new fraud out there where bidders are notified offline that the item was not paid for and that they can have it for their bid price. So the Bidder_1, Bidder_2 format is now prevalent on Ebay and is a legitimate but anonymous bid.

I'm one of the high bidders and spoke to Dave Latham at Bud's and he said that he can't find parts for the ZF anymore. The seller says that the company (Zahnrdfabrik Friedrichshafen AG) still has parts. Does anyone know if this is true?

zanone ..... ZF does not have any repair parts for this transmission (I checked). There may be a couple of spares somewhere but I was not able to find them. The main bearing are standard and available anywhere but the gears and syncro cannot be found.

The shift linkage is the same as the 4-speed and easily repaired.

Jim is right. Several of us with ZF boxes on our 113s have researched this and have found that ZF has very little to offer for this box. The main bearings, as Jim says, are standard items. Most of the fasteners, studs and other such hardware are common DIN items. Std metric sized seals can also be found on the box. Gaskets can be cut if required from gasket material, but forget about castings, shafts, gears or pretty much anything else. There is a Maserati dealership, I believe out in the Northwest, that does carry a manual that describes the repair of the box complete with an illustrated parts breakout--the Maserati box of the same number (S520) differs somewhat from the one on the 113s and except for the linkage, is bascially the same internally. Should be able to find several posts on this on the board.

There seems to be a few sources for MGB and related 5-speed conversions. Some use the Datsun 240Z transmission and another a European Ford (Sierra). I didn't dive too deep, but it sure looks interesting. What's worthwhile is to look at the sites offering these; they seem to be non-obtrusive to the car and reasonable in price. My guess is the people that engineer these kits could or would do something for the 113. All it takes is someone with some money and a serious interest in an alternative 5-speed since the factory ZF is elusive and rare and hard to service without parts.

Speaking of 5-speeds, what happened to the [Borg-Warner or Mustang] T5 transmission in your car? Will be get a look see this summer at Joe's or has the project been stalled or abandoned?

George .... I have attached an exploded diagram the ZF internals.

I have the English Ford 5-speed in my MGB. I bought it as a complete kit that included a bell housing, drive shaft, cross member and shift mechanism. It looks and drives like a stock transmission with a fifth gear. I had an overdrive transmission before this 5-speed and I would never go back.

The 190SL has the same lack of 5-speed problem. At some point, I will probably look seriously at adapting a 240Z box.

I know nothing about the gear boxes but I did remember a thread started by Detlef K. (known here as "ZwoachtzigSL") on the German Pagoda web site about a 5-speed conversion offered by the STICKEL company in Germany. Perhaps you 5-speed aficionados can check this out in more detail.
STICKEL (and AMG-Laufer) uses a GETRAG-Type 265 which was used in the BMW 3.0CS, Opel Manta 1.8i and several Volvo's.

I've met the seller. He's a nice older guy. That gull wing was restored several years back, and as of 2 years ago had basically 0 miles since the restoration.

At that time, he was driving the W113 a bit. I guess he's since stopped doing that.

Jim--thx--I have the S5-20 manual that is available from the Maserati Club. All the exploded diagrams are included in the manual as well as detailed instructions on how to disassemble/re-assemble. The issue is really the availability of parts once you get in there and assess what is needed. Somewhere, I have a list of all the parts. I got this list from Michael Eagen a time ago. Hallo George Des.
I have seen that you have a italian 230sl with five speed gear box. If is original mb, please, can you tell me if you have on the odometer the max speed of 230km/h? I have a italian 250sl with option 230 and 232 (ratio 4.08 and five speed) but my odometer shows 220km/h.I have some doubts that my odometer is original.
You excuse if I are inserted me, but I didn't know whether to turn this question.

My 230Sl speedometer reads up to 220Km/hr. This I know is the original. I have had the car since 1976, having purchased it outside Vicenza in a town Ponte di Costozza. It was first registered in Modena by the original owner.
