Injection pump oil level

The oil level in my injetion pump is above the little mark on the dipstick should I remove it{somehow}or is it doing no harm its a 65 model      Regards Mike Rutledge.

I would remove it, using a syringe and plastic tubing as a sucker or, a bit trickier, use the pump from a plastic bottle and insert the feed tube in the filler hole.  I always assumed that too much oil would have the same potential for the pump as it does an engine: frothing and reduced lubrication effectiveness.

Hey Mike,
How much over filled is the oil level?
Do you normally drive you car a lot?
What sort of running does your car have and what is the fuel consumption like?
I ask these questions because if the oil level is too high it will have a direct affect on the running and economy of the engine.
I change my injection pump oil every 6 months when I change the engine oil and check the level regularly.

Do you monitor the oil level as part of your weekly/monthly home check up?

The oil level increases because some internal inj pump seals coud need replacing.
It is something to monitor.

Is the level on a '65 fed from the engine oil or is it like my '64 that needs to be filled and changed through the fill hole?

I believe all 230SL pumps need manually emptied/filled.  I'm not sure about the date or VIN it changed to the 280SL style with the connection to the motor oil.

Hello Bob,its about 4cm above the level mark.The car is driven about 400 miles ayear at the moment{more in the future I hope}It drives great too.The trips are about 20-30 miles average.I have checked it a couple of times in the past but never changed it.The oil is clean and does not smell of petrol,it seems the right viscosity too,Iam very keen on the servicing since Ibought the car 10 yrs ago,I have never seen this item on the service guides the car has done 54k from new Many Thanks. Hey Mike,
Do you mean 4mm ?
The reason I ask is that the whole reservoir would be full of oil with possibly some almost flowing on to your garage floor.

I attached a pic of the dip stick showing the upper oil level.
If the oil smells ok, I would adjust it to the correct level.

400 miles a year, gee I can't stay out of my car on the weekends.

Hey Hill, I believe only the earlier cars had them -- yours might not. And not to question your IQ, just your ability to see around corners in the dark, they are difficult to see...

Further to James' point, and I think he's spot on, for info I have a late '66 230SL and my FI pump has a dipstick. It took me months to find it, but it was there. When I opened it about a ton of oil poured out onto the floor. I am now in the process of trying to get my FI pump sorted. (Leakey 'O' ring seals I think).

On a good note after 2,000 miles the engine oil looks, smells and feels good with no loss.

I use the Mityvac hand pump with a very small 4mm outside diameter,approx.2mm inside diameter & 21mm long plastic tube attached to the end of the Mityvac hose with the small black plastic hose fitting, secured with super glue, that comes with the Mityvac kit. Always pump the oil out from the dip stick opening. The fill hole will not allow you to pump all of the oil out.
