Something to consider...the cost of a 250SL

Here's something to consider...the cost of a MB250SL was about $6900 in 1967, and with options, probably a little more.  There are websites that will calculate that costs in 2007 dollars using the Consumer Price Index (CPI).  So, for grins, I ran the calculation, and it turns out, if I did it right...that $6900 = $42,500 in today's (2007) dollars!

I guess I don't feel as bad with what I'm spending!!

In 67 the exchange rate was about 4 Deutch Marks to the US Dollar. Even though the German currency is the Euro now, I wonder how the current exchange rate to Dollars would factor into that price.

Was it around 1977-1983 that the Benz prices started to really soar a bit, even the most pedestrian models such as later w114 or w123 (not that these cars were ever inexpensive new as imports)?

I think it even extended a bit on both sides of that year range. MB cars of the late 80's and early 90's were very expensive, the 129 body was in the US$ 83K range when it came out in 1990. When Lexus and Infiniti showed up, the prices dropped by a large number. There were even some paybacks put in place, as the cars prices dropped significantly in one model years time (the SL is one I can remember, and I think the S class cars as well).

One must also consider how much more content today's cars have.  There are comprehensive safety, emission and convenience systems, more sophisticated suspension systems and fairly exotic engines/transmissions.  The 113 is pretty crude by today's standards.
