Even a Humble Car Deserves a Good Top
« on: February 27, 2007, 21:04:01 »
Here is a completely refurbished top, fresh from Gernold's shop on my 280SL project.  Before his work, it had major problems: many missing parts, and the right side of the frame was bent, requiring a pivot bolt to be removed to lower the top, and stuck back in when the top was raised.

Now the challenge is to get the rest of the car even close to this standard.  But, progress has been made:

Heater and blower working
Dash wood refinished
Dash recovered
Head rebuilt
Rebuilt starter and alternator
Injectors cleaned
Transmission serviced
New motor and subframe mounts
Kingpins, trailing arm bushings, and miscellaneous other suspension stuff
Most of the caked-on grease removed from engine bay

Car is currently running and driving very well.

Top looks great.  I always wished our plastic window had zippers like many of the British cars so you could enjoy a little more fresh air, but didn't feel like stowing the top.
