congestion and emissions
« on: March 05, 2007, 12:19:16 »
Here in Londonistan, we are getting a little spooked about how the new emissions regulations are going to affect us. Europe is going green ( forget China and Poland and India )and there are some scary things happening very soon, for example Germany is pushing for two amendments to it's transport directive, one being that ALL old cars are off the road for good and/or that cars with historic status are only allowed out for 55 days a year. It looks like Red Ken, our congestion TAX mad mayor is going to follow suit. Does anyone this side of the pond know whats going on?

old cars often have higher emissions than newer ones as engines are less efficient etc. But the environmental cost of keeping an oldie on the road is far lower than building one from scratch

So would it be cynical of me to suggest that "Europes biggest car making nation seeks to protect it's industrial base"?

Be interesting to find out how this might be monitored - although I suppose the CC cameras could be put to another use.

London Low Emission Zone
At the end of January, Transport for London published their expected consultation on proposals to create a "Low Emission Zone" aimed at improving air quality in Greater London. The proposals can be found at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/low-emission-zone/default.asp  and include suggested measures to restrict (or at least discourage) the use of older commercial vehicles. There are no proposals to impose restrictions on the use of older cars or motor cycles as it has been recognised that these make little contribution to overall pollution levels. FBHVC's legislation team will be looking at the proposals over the next few weeks.
