Engine Numbers ?
« on: May 25, 2007, 10:53:47 »
I am about to start a restoration on a 250 SL LHD. The car's VIN is 113043.10.002046. The engine number in the UK registraton document is 129.982.10.000783. The actual engine number is 130.980.20.004306, which I think is  from a 280 auto transmission and not a 250 manual. The head casting number is 1290160301 and is clearly a 250 head, as indicated by the large 250 in the casting above the number engine number in the block.

Can anyone confirm that the engine is a 280 engine, and is from a 113 or some other 280 MB?

There is no Vin plate on the car, but I understand that replacements can be obtained. any infor on where/how would be appreicated.

I was told the car started life in Italy. How can I can verify this.

Any help is much appreciated.

thanks

BobT

The engine number is from a 280 engine, but I do not have the secondary numbers to know if this is from an SL. I am traveling and do not have the reference materials to be able to tell you anything more. I am sure the site group will be able to tell you more info.

280sl engine is 130.983
280se engine is 130.980

The 'actual engine number' indicates a 280SE RHD manual
130.980  = 280SE
.20.  = rhd manual
004306 is the engine number

The original VIN is located on the front frame near the air filter housing.
You may need to clean the area but the numbers were stamped there.

Does the car have small round side reflector/lights on the front fenders? These were usually installed on the Italian models.

I think Rodds' car started out in Italy too.

Hi Bobt,
if you have the old italian number plate I can know the story of the car from the first owner until the car was exported from Italy.
Many cars come from Italy because the body conditions are better than in other countries (like Germany), but you cannot say the same thing for mechanic in general because the maintenance is worst, and many owners, when there is some heavy engine breakdown, change it with another took from the contemporary saloons!

On a car built for Italy, the data card Auftragsnummer would have 543 as the 2nd to 4th digit. Additionally, the data card would show code 620.
On the Body and Paint Number Plate, located underhood on the left side on top of the relais holder, after the Baumuster 113043 10 there would also be a 5, which indicates "Europe except Germany".
