Approx cost of the parts, for an engine rebuild ?
« on: July 13, 2007, 07:13:37 »
Newbie question:

Please kindly give me the approximate cost of the parts, for a full engine rebuild for a 230SL inline engine ?

I am looking at just the cost of the parts, less labor and machine work.

Pistons, rings, gaskets, (perhaps the top end (heads) parts as well ?)

Also are their any kits to rebuild the water pump etc... ?

I understand it is a broad question, with potential different areas that will need additional mechanical attention, but I am looking to get just an idea, for the approximate cost of the parts for a basic engine rebuild.

Thanks
Ralph

you could call metric motors,  the complete rebuild from them including shipping (domestic) was about $6100.00 US.

It also depends on what you need done and the condition of the cam, crank, head and block.

Thanks Matt:

I just used the search feature [:p], and located another post, that mentioned trying MM.

The price you mentioned, is for a long block rebuild.   I will e-mail them some questions I have.

Thanks for the information

I did a complete rebuild - rings - all bearings - valves - seats -

gaskets and other misc. parts. He pulled and reinstalled for

approx. 3k. Rebuilder sent it out to a machine shop for machine

work. I feel there are many qualified  Euro engine rebuildres that

can often times do the work for a lot less and are qualified.

When Joe Alexander and I did the rebuild on my engine, as I recall the total cost of all the parts, including pistons, rings, main and connecting rod bearings, all valves and two or three valve seats, gaskets, a new oil pump, timing chain plus gliders and sprockets, and probably a host of smaller parts I am forgetting right now, came to a bit under $2,000.

Now in Germany the cost of pistons and rings for a 230 engine alone will set you back something like $2,000; for some reason in the US pistons seem to be much cheaper than in Europe; they are the same (Mahle or Kolbenschmidt) make as far as I know.

I believe MM also sells the parts separately.

There are 3 different pistons used in a 230SL engine depending on when the engine was built. Early 4 ring pistons with 24 mm pin, 3 ring pistons with 24 mm pin and late 3 ring pistons with 25 mm pin. The early pistons use different conecting rods that are gun drilled to lubricate the piston pin bushings.

I have engine rebuild kits available that include pistons, bearings, timing chain, rails, chain tensioner, gasket set, valve guides, valver stem seals and pin bushings. The oil pump is priced seperately because each different pump is priced differently.
If you need ( and should use ) crank gear, valves, springs, cam gear, crank spacer and other parts they're priced seperately.
There are always other things to look at like fuel hoses, injection pump rebuild, engine hardware parts plated, engine bay painting, clutch parts, tans rebuilds, flex disc and possible drive shaft rebuild. If the car has been sitting for a long time I strongly advise anyone to have the fuel tank cleaned and avoid a whole lot of problems down the road. All of this work could easily cost 10 - 15K.

For what its worth, I bought all of these parts for my early 230SL about 5 years ago, total cost for parts was €2,700 !

Maching the head and crank cost me €600 and I did the labour myself !

Hope that helps !
