Right side mirrors discontinued

I just learned that the right side passenger mirror for the 280SL 1968 to 1971 has been discontinued. If you have spares they are gold now.Plastic white mirror gasket and mirror glass is still availible.

This could be a safety issue for owners that have right hand drive cars.  I always thought that MB always took these things into account.  Looks like the NLA list will be getting longer. :(

It's confusing how some of these things become NLA.  Does it usually follow economics for the producers/distributors?  For a car that has so many still available parts, the number and the type of NLA or increasingly expensive parts seems odd sometimes.

Bob

I have not checked recently but my experience in getting two right hand side mirrors in the last couple of years suggests that there is a bit of confusion within MB about this part. Although I live in the UK both of my SLs are left hand drive and I wanted passenger side mirrors for each car. I found a difference between ordering a passenger side mirror for a LHD car (NLA or on back order) and ordering a driver side mirror for a RHD car (available immediately from Germany). To my mind this is the same part yet they seemed to be treated differently.

For the time being, Miller's still has the right hand mirrors available.

I believe the RHD drivers door mirror is flat glass, but when ordered as a pass door mirror (for an LHD car), it shud have a convex glass which seems to be unavailable.
Would be interesting to know if Miller's mirrors are flat or convex glass  :?:
Anybody have a part # for the convex glass?

That is a stunning knowledge of detail. I have been out to the car park and...you are correct -  I have two perfect flat glass mirrors.

Separate question - I need a new battery for my 1966 230SL. The man in Kwik Fit is treating me as though I am asking for a Class A drug and the man at the MB parts department as though I am using a Class A drug for wanting to buy a battery from him from Germany. Have you any idea as to what I should buy and where to get it from?

Andrew,

A convex lens on the pass side works wonders.!! :D
I personally would prefer one on the driver's door too, hence the request for a lens part # (Later ones for a 280SL).
Here's a good link to the 230 mirrors:

I shall let you know about battries when I get to work tomorrow a.m.

I hope my message  was under stood this is for Left hand drive cars Germany, USA. I was very surprised to learn this right hand mirror assembly being disconntinued. It  seems there is a big safty issue  when I last drove my 280SL that I  became dependent on this extra mirror and would miss not having  it there. Because these mirror are small compaired by todays standards you  really have to pay attention when changing lanes.
I would say may be it was a basic rule of economics that these mirror were not  in demand, or the manufacturer simply did not feel enough were being sold.
That leads me to question as  early type mirrors for 230SL and early 250SL are these still availible and if so is the right side for LHD cars availible too.
Also AS ACT pointed out in this post that for RHD cars the mirror might be the  same if you live in England, I don't know about the mirror glass but that could be changed? Does anyone have a part number and source for a righthand side mirror for a RHD 280SL I am curious?

Hey Bob, not sure if you are asking this but I believe the 230SL driver's sides are NLA and that the passenger side was never even available. Some have opted to use mirrors from other models. The gooseneck is different but it is close.

James,

I have bought and installed right-hand mirrors for both of my 230SLs.  Standard MBZ part, "mirror image" (sorry!) of the original.  I think I bought mine from the old Star Quality, but they were clearly available 5 years ago, and may still be found.

hey guys

I realy think that there was only a left side mirror for LHD cars
and a right side mirror for RHD cars. When our cars were built two door mirrors were a rare accesory, and the ones we now see installed were bought aftermarket and installed for appearance. A convex mirror would have to be adapted from a later model car, cut and ground to fit.

With that said, In my box of goodies, I have a 113 gooseneck style right door mirror stem, gasket, head, ring and glass, All it is lacking is the bolt, spring and ball to hold it all together,  Does anyone have a broken gooseneck style mirror for either side that they would want to part with?? so that I could complete my set.

Thanx

I think we all may be a bit correct on this. It makes sense that a RHD mirror could be put on a LHD -- and that they may have been available 5 years ago. I am still pretty sure LHD ones are scarce.

And for sake of discussion, the codes on that list were not all available for the 230SLs were they? Some were added as later models appeared. Might be the case for 508. Anyone with a 230SL have the 508 option?

Yes my 66 230SL has the 508 on the data card, but it has no right hand mirror. I am not sure if it was taken off, or was never there. I need to open up the door and look in to see if it was filled in by a PO. The car came fairly unmolested but who knows. The vin is 113042-12-0134xx. Date on data card is NOV 22 1965.

I did buy & installed a rh. mirror on my '69 280SL, but it is not shown as an available part for that model car. It comes from a sedan, like the 280 SE or SEL. I also obtained a convex mirror assembly, meaning the glass, the retaining ring and the chromed housing from a local junk yard. That was after I had purchased a convex mirror from a truck supply house. It was large enough to have a glass shop cut the required shape. I just installed that in the rh. mirror housing. Works as it should.I bought the  rh mirror from Star quality parts 800 782-7199, p/n 1528-810-113-GP $77.62 on 2/2/'04 The MB p/n is 113 810 30 16 or more likely 110 810 10 16 . For the 230SL the p/n is 1108100816

Hello, Al,
I do not have a broken gooseneck style mirror but I do have the other items you mention (screw, spring, gasket and ball-end).
Let me have your mailing address and I'll be happy to send them to you. :)

hey Naj

You are truly one of the goodn's.
I sent you an email with my postal address.
Thank You!! Please let me know if there is something I can do for you in return.

I just noticed that if I mount the right mirror in the same position on door as the left, that it will be partially obscured by the window post.

What do you guys think?? Should I mount the right mirror about 1-1/2 inches (40mm)further back than the left one?
Should I plug the holes in the left door and move them both back so they are the same?
Or is there a third possibility that I am not thinking of??

Third possiblilty: move them both back and plug the holes on the driver's side too!

I remembered reading this post from Peter Ruehl many years ago (2003):

quote:

My car came originally with two mirrors ('66 euro) and 23 years ago when I refitted some chrome, I also replaced the mirrors. The front whole for the right side is exactely where the back whole is on the left side. So the right mirror is about 4 cm further back. It would be useless if further up front.

The thread that this quote came from (http://www.sl113.com/forums/index.php?topic=202) also states that the passenger mirror option (502) was always available (as Peter's post also implies).

David and all;

I was going to remove the studs from the gooseneck and duck-tape the mirror on in different locations on the right door before I drilled any holes, my 40mm(4cm)figure was just a guess, a lucky one at that.

The idea of placing the front stud where the rear hole would be was the location I was planning on trying first.

Naj;

I don't have the backing plate for inside the right door, I was just going to drill out a piece of 1" steel strap to fit up inside the door. That is similar to what is inside my drivers door, I have no reason to suspect that this isn't the original.

Doing so more research on the right side door  mirror assemblie I have some one checking for part numbers in England for right hand drive 250SL &  280SLs. In the mean time one of our members who'm I spoke to long ago referred me to a site that does nothing but make Multiplex mirrors which reveals you bline spots.their phone is number 734-595-8957. Perhaps as a group we order enough mirrors for our own cars we can get a substanical saving and pass on the extra mirrors forsale on our web site.
