Monterey Historic Races

I made it to the Monterey Historics again this year and had a great time.  For a car nut it's like a kid in the candy store to be able to walk around the paddock area and see all the classic sports cars and race cars being prepped to race.  Most people are happy to talk about their car if they're not too pressed for time.

Usually there are several 300SL's but the only Mercedes I could find this year was a nicely done 190SLR.  The track shots are of "the corkscrew", one of the best places to watch.

I was there, too, and that 190 is the only Merc I remember seeing in the paddock.  Last year there were three Gullwings, but I don't think they raced.

If one can overdose on too much of a good thing, this is the place. Every Ferrari, Lambo, Aston and Bentley in California must have been some place on the Peninsula over the weekend.  There were ten times more Ferraris than rental Mustang convertibles. Unless it's a 300 SL. Mercedes are insignificant at this gathering. Porsches hardly register either.

I drove the Porsche this year, because it is the first year I've had it. I'll think seriously about taking the Pagoda next time.  I've taken it up to Monterey before, but not for the historics.

I saw two other Pagodas; one was at the Russo and Steele auction.

Nice pix.  Here are some shots of a 230sl in The Corral* at the Concorso Italiano (held at the Blackhorse golf course in Seaside CA the same weekend as the Historics).  Does this belong to anyone here?

I believe that's Richard Simonds car.  It's a very nice car, I think he won Best in Class at the Palo Alto Concourse several years ago.

We'll have to get organized for next year so we can all meet up and kick some tires.

Absolutely!  Or would could put together a Central Coast Rally of our own (if the fog ever lifts.)

Russo and Steele sold this one at auction in Monterey. It did look very nice, but that price is not spectacular.

A 1954 Gullwing went for $764,500 which seems a very aggressive price.  You can look at the auction results at http://www.russoandsteele.com/  You have to register with them, but it's just email

I don't know that any of the other several auctions had any Pagodas. I did see Steve McQueen's Ferrari Lusso at Chrities which went for $2.13M!

This stunning nut and bolt restoration, numbers matching, all correct 280 SL has been in a private collection for many years. The car has power steering, automatic transmission, correct AM/FM radio, and air conditioning. Take this car to any event and it would be one of the best and a great driver. I hope the new owner will join our group.

After watching the race and seeing my friend in an Austin Healey 3000 and the 190SLR race, it got me to thinking dangerous thoughts....it would really be fun to get a fully prepped 113 out on the track just to see what it could do.  I know that our friend Pete Lesler built a race car, maybe he can chime in and let us know what it was like to drive.
