speedometer cable problem

Hi- should my new speedo cable(from k&k) have come with the rubber seal on the tranny end ? I can't reuse the old one because they changed the way it fits on the new cable. I also was thinking about changing the rear motor/tranny mount since I have it exposed. Any advice or info will be helpfull. thanks Bill 71 280 SL automatic

Garry- thanks for the reply-My cable looks to be the same brand (GEMO),but yours is for a manual tranny, I assume, so I don't know if that would make any difference. The post by r.bartl on 6 Oct 2006 shows the rubber seal that came with his cable. Maybe different brands include it? Bill 71 280 SL automatic

My manual tranny speedo cable (original?) has a rubber seal.  It compresses in the housing against an oil seal for the driven gear shaft.  It keeps road dirt, moisture, etc from attacking the inside of the speedo cable.  Here is a pic of the manual trans speedo cable connection.  The picture is upside down from the final installation.

When installed the cable is inserted from underneath the housing at a 45 degree angle.  The driven gear shaft connection is about 1 inch deep inside the housing. The rubber ring on the cable is about 1/4 - 3/8 inch in height and it seals the opening in the area beneath the bolt in the pic.  Without it a gap about 1/8 inch wide by 1/4 inch or so is open and exposed to the elements.  This gap can be easily filled by a short pice of rubber 5/8 dia hose.
