65 230 SL directional signal switch
« on: November 27, 2007, 18:24:06 »
Hi ,
Does anyone know if the directional signal switch on a 1964-65 Euro specification 230 SL has the "headlight dimmer" in the switch or is it floor mounted...? We're trying to make sure we buy the correct switch from our parts source.....Thanks , Lou

My Euro-spec 230sl was produced in March 1965, and it has the foot dimmer switch. I presume yours should too.

Should my english level makes me understand what you are talking about is the high /low beam headlights.
On my car (March 1965) it is activated by a foot pushbutton. (Hope you understand what I mean? It's the way I call it! ) :|

Not to complicate matters but there is also a flash-to-pass function on the stalk. It momentarily triggers a higher beam.

James is correct!  In addition to the foot switch that selects between high-beam and low-beam, the turn-signal stalk switch has a feature to momentarily select the high-beam when you pull it back. Hope this helps...

On the 111 coupes the wire was folded back(left unconnected) on the back of the fuse box.  Try '29b' combo sw to fuse 10- left hi beam on the back of the fuse box.  The 10 fuse wire is in the big wire bundle behind the fuse box.  Don't have the color wiring diagram here right now.  Flasher should work then.

I finally got around to hooking up the "flash to pass" feature on my U.S. spec 66 230SL last night.  It took about 20 minutes.  I now have the period original "flash-to-pass" feature as found on Euro-spec Pagodas.

1: Disconnect ground wire from its battery terminal.

2: Remove fuse box cover and two screws holding the fuse block itself to firewall, push fuse block back into the passenger compartment and roll it around until you can see back of block.  (Removing the under dash panel will make it easier to access and position the fuse block from below so that you can do steps 3 through 5 from above, through the fuse box slot in the firewall.  You'll have to remove the under dash panel anyway to retrieve the fuse panel screw if you drop it!)

3: You will see a white wire with violet stripe folded over and taped to itself and to the white wire with black stripe that is attached to the #10 fuse terminal.

4: Remove tape, carefully straighten (remember, it has been folded over on itself for 40-odd years!)and strip the end of the white/violet wire, and attach a terminal end with a crimping tool.  (Important:  Before crimping, check the terminal end for size to be sure that it fits into one of the empty terminal recesses on the back of the fuse block.)

5: Unscrew the screw securing the white/black wire to terminal #10 (left high beam), add the white/violet wire, and re-tighten the screw, securing both the white/black and white/violet wires to terminal #10.

6: Reposition the fuse block, secure it with the two screws, replace the cover and the under dash panel, and reconnect battery.  Pulling back on the turn signal stalk will now allow you to signal with the high beams even when the headlights and/or ignition are off. This is separate from the high beam/low beam function of the foot operated dip switch.
