Grommets
« on: September 24, 2003, 13:50:44 »
Not very exciting this one I'm afraid:
1.traced a water leak during carwash in passenger footwell to 2 dead grommets in firewall; dealer says he has to have part nr. to identify but that's impossible to reconstruct.
Could anybody have this info please ?
It concerns 2 grommets near the coolant overflow tank (RHD car), one contains bonnet release cable and tube from washerpump; the other contains 1 sleeved cable going to front of engine (What is this one for ??) and 1 sleeved cable going down to auto gearbox.
The grommets are identical and all I can make out is that their number starts with 110.
2. The aformentioned sleeve cable going to the front of engine (it ends just right of the oil line to/from top of oil cooler)had a bit of earth strap wire wrapped round it.
Should this be attached to anything ??
As ever:thanks.

Raoul

Many of my grommets are in lousy shape (or non-existent) as well.

Although grommet kits are cheap and available, I have decided to put them on the longer-term list for when I paint the car again. In the shorterm, I am more cautious with car washing  -- not to flood the "bonnet" area. And, since mine is primarily a sunny-day car, I am not overly concerned.

Only thing I can add about the mystery cable is: does your tachometer work? It sounded a bit like that cable.

Cheers

Hey Raoul
Are they the Tacho cable as James suggests and speedo cable?

Speedo picks up from back of gearbox output.

Have a look at this site (in German langauge): http://sls.sparebase.de/start/index.phtml

it has a page that shows all the grommets including the ones you are seeking.

Alternately K&K site ( http://www.kkmfg.com/ ) has a complete kit of grommets for about USD $55.00

Thanks guys, you're right it was the speedo and rev counter cable; finally found the part nr as well: A 110 997 03 81 (cost £ 0.27) and then after all that...."no longer available".
Guess I have to find a bit of rubber and fashion it into a grommet.

Hi Bob,

The W113 Spare Parts list uses the word: "Heckleuchte".

Raoul,
I believe NLA refers to official Mercedes Benz supplies, or maybe to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) versions.  I would first go to our suppliers list (http://www.sl113.org/data/show_table.asp?table_name=usr_parts_and_service_suppliers) and make some phone calls or send e-mails.  I would think someone sells reproductions.  Even if you have to get them shipped from another country, they would probably be worth it in quality.  You can probably get a whole set and do your whole firewall.

I believe NLA means No Longer Available.  However, K & K Mfg. was selling this part a few months ago as a reproduction, and it fits like the original.

I don't know if this means NLA from any source or NLA from the manufacturer or OEM.  For example, if I started making grommets, would they still be NLA?  Can anyone clear up my confusion?

I think the term NLA refers only to factory original parts, when out of production.  Reproductions are probably not taken into consideration.  For example, the interior light was NLA at MBZ, but is available from Miller's as a reproduction (made in Mexico).  Tom Hanson would be a good expert on this.

Thanks for your suggestions; found that K&K sells complete "firewall grommet set" for $55 and SLS charges €20 for just the 2 grommets I was looking for; so far neither have replied to my emails.
