Newbee Needs VIN Decode
« on: January 24, 2008, 18:29:23 »
Hi:

I'm brand new here and need some help.  My need is to decode the VIN on a very nice 67 230SL.  Would also like to decode the frame tag. How and where?  Thank you.

Ya gotta love 'em!

If your 230SL is a left-hand drive automatic, your vin should begin "113-042-12-xxxxxx, with the xxxxxx being the actual chassis number.  If it is a manual transmission the "12" will be "10" and if it is a right-hand drive model the numbers will be "22" or "20."

There is a very good chassis plate decoding tool in the forums.  Just do a search for "chassis plate."

Rodd, can I suggest that someone look at the color photo at the very end of the Vehicle Identification Number link and flip it around 180 degrees for easier recognition?
