NEW TO BOARD IS THERE A ASSEMBLY MANUAL?
« on: January 28, 2008, 10:55:34 »
I have restored corvettes in the past and have recently gotten a 1971 280SL it and about 15 boxes of parts....The first of many questions I am sure...with Corvettes there were assembly manuals, copies of the actual pages that were used at the factory to put the car together showing all the pieces and bolts with each part and how they fit.  I got a service manual so far for the mercedes, but no assemble manual which I really need, for some of these parts I have no idea where they fit.  Does such and item exist? Also I have a Hardtop that I have no place to store, what is the going price?

I would start by taking the heater core out and then assembling the car around it, just kidding. That was mentioned a few posts ago on a heater core question. You are in for a life changing experience. I sure hope your family misses you when your gone. I mean gone out in the garage trying to get your dash apart and together, and that windshield gasket! Watch out for that left handed nut that was thrown just to mess you up.

I don't think there is an assembly manual (well maybe there's a german one).  The Mercedes Service Manual, or Big Blue Book (BBB) is probably the closest you will come.  You can also get repair manuals from Hayne's and Glenn's.  And of course check out the Technical Manual on this site:

Baron,

Hello and welcome to the Group!  Boy, you're really in for it!  I don't know if you're courageous or crazy!

Regarding an assembly book, I don't think that book exists.  Here's a list of books we've compiled:
http://www.sl113.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n=Documents.Start

I think most people who can put these cars together from boxes just have years and years of experience in Mercedes-Benz repair and restoration.  For one thing, you will need parts and service suppliers:
http://www.sl113.org/data/show_table.asp?table_name=usr_parts_and_service_suppliers

I see in your profile that you're from Illinois.  Near Chicago?  There are several members here from the Chicago area.  Maybe they could help in some way??

Best of luck to you!  Once you get started, just ask us questions and they'll get answered.  And you can always use the Search feature, the button is in the top right corner of the screen.

Hi, This is a vicarious trip for all.  With 15 boxes of parts, you probably have everything.  Put the top on the car or hang it from the ceiling.  Does it run?  What is your plan of attack?  Complete body restoration?  If the engine is out, it is easy to run it-attach radiator, tank, tranny, instruments, etc. while body is being fixed.  Give us your plans.  You'll get plenty of advice-good advice.

Hi,

I suggest you obtain access to the Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC) which I believe MBUSA members can do by paying very little.

The EPC has exploded drawings for each section of the car and shows every part (inline of assembly) and part number.
