Baffle Plate
« on: March 18, 2008, 10:41:24 »
Has anyone ever replaced their right baffle plate?  The right side body plate that holds the right side of the radiator and also provides an enclosure for the airfilter canister.

My question is...  is this replacement body piece (as marked with red arrow below) the side wall and also the bottom panel (basically a bucket?), or is the replacement piece just the side wall and does not include the bottom?

Bob,

http://www.sls-hh-catalogue.de/bin/dbframes.phtml?mid=IN02

looks like it depends on the car
per the sls web site looks like one is just a side panel and one is kind of L shaped.

the K&K site shows a L shaped one as well.

Thanks Matt!
I also noticed this from the SLS pics and from what Cheryl sent me from K&K.  Since the pictures are not that clear, I thought that I would see if anyone from our group had actually replaced theirs and/or had a "real" pic of the part out of the car.
I am just trying to get a jump on this to keep my bodyshop moving forward...  I had to order this piece for replacement, which will take several days coming from Germany.  I know this sounds odd, but I never noticed that mine was missing the rear half of the side wall.  For some reason,,,   a PO cut out the rear section of the side wall, and neatly bent over the edges.  So it sort of looks OE, but its not.  Clearly visable now that the engine bay is down to the metal...

Thanks again, Bob  :)

Hey Bob,
Is the air filter canister the correct one for an SL?

Hi Bob,
Maybe it's called by another name.  What I am referring to by the airfilter canister is marked with a red arrow on the pic below...
Thanks, Bob

Bob, My '65 230SL has a 'about 150 degree' enclosure with a bottom.  It is welded all around-to the cross bar(that runs across the front), to the fore and aft horizontal rail, and up the fender well.  Seems the bottom is neccessary to give the structural strength to support the radiator.  Also, good job on the car! :)

Hey Bob,
I was wondering if a previous owner had installed a air filter canister from a sedan at one stage.

My guess is that someone cut away this section of the bucket to get some extra clearance for the annual recharging of the air conditioning.

The roto-lock service ports were impossible to get to, and after the system was recharged you had to reach down through the hot manifolds and water hoses to close the service port valves and unhook the charging hoses, Ouch!

Bob,

I think Al is correct, I've seen this piece often being half cut away on several pagodas with AC. Often in a much rougher way than on your car. I've attached a drawing of the part(FIG 22 - #1136200236) from the EPC, where it looks like the bottom part is included. The second picture shows this area on my Non-AC project car, seemingly still in its original state.  Note the black paint brushed on to cover areas that are visible through the grill section. These look original, and I will attempt to recreate them by splashing around with a brush and some black paint after the engine compartment is painted.

Thanks Glennard, Bob, Al, Hans,
That all makes sense.  When the new replacement piece arrives next week, I'll take a pic and post.
It will make it easier for the bodyshop guy if its all one piece, vs having to cut out the side wall and re weld to the bottom plate...

the part you are talking about is what the dealers cut through to fit the air conditioner hose through it also in some way looks like it supports the air filter housing canister. the part number is #A 113 620 04 36 Baffle plate or in German Litblech!

Looking at my new one it curves around at the bottom and looks to be two peices tack welded together. Get me off line your email and I will take some phots of the part to send to you.

Hi,

Bob is right, for a 280 SL the correct part number for the baffle plate is 113 620 04 36, the part# 113 620 02 36 that I listed is for a 230 SL.

Thanks Guys :) !
It's nice to know that there was a good reason that a section was cut out.  Since I removed my A/C, I will just have the new baffle plate installed whole.  The new one I ordered should be here by Monday, I hope!
Thanks again,
Bob

Here is a picture of the baffle plate (part number 113 620 04 36).  The part is complete with side wall and also bottom bucket, or shelf.

Picture compliments of Mr. Geco.  Thanks Bob G.!
