« on: April 04, 2008, 21:29:55 »
Well Ladies and germs! i finally got myself a Pagoda.

Now, I'm embarassed - I need to replace the right front signal bulb and can't figure out how to remove it     :?:

Also noticed two little (tiny) bulbs next to the main running/parking bulb - what are those? And that main running light bulb - what's up with that weird shape?

Ooops, almost forgot (just like a newbie  ;) ) - she's a '67 230

Help is appreciated as always,
Kevin

4 qty. 116's, 2 qty 107's, 2 qty 126's, a 140 and now a 113. This is no hobby, its an addiction...

Others who really know lights will jump in here but to get started:

If the headlights are original early USA style, they are likely to be "AC" or maybe "AN" type lights. (The headlight model is marked on the glass). The original lights may have been changed to the more available "AJ" by a previous owner.

You ask about "Signal Bulb", assume this is the turn signal light.

The headlight Chrome Surround comes off the car by removing the single screw on the bottom of the Surround, then unhooking the Surround at the top. This exposes the light door, inner screws, and the bulbs.

The back of each type unit has a slightly different design. The bulbs will now be exposed or an inner cover may have to be unscrewed. The bulbs are bayonet type that come out by pushing in then turning.

Not sure what "weird shape" means except that modern bulbs (halogen, etc) have very small thin bulb bodies.

Take a look at the Tech Manual links below, they may help or wait till a better reply is posted.

If you have a photo of the light it may help.

In case you have Euro lights:

Thanks Richard - I had read thru that last nite and determined I have the original AC style which makes it 41 years old. I think you pretty much confirmed what I suspected - the chrome should come right off the "door" or bezel, so my problem is, the chrome is stuck to the door but good... it has probably been many years since they were separated. The inside of the lens/door is pretty dirty - you can hardly tell there is a second, amber lens for the turn signal behind the clear door.

The assembly presently resides on the kitchen counter for my next move - I guess I'll have to try to "muscle" it off without breaking something - anybody have any suggestions?

In the meantime, the main parking lamp is a strange shape. I found the drawing of it in the Tech Manual as well and will point to it next post.  Do you know what the 2 tiny little bulbs are next to this main bulb? I'm thinking they're "city lights"?

Thanks again and
Best regards,
Kevin

P.S. - her maiden voyage is today. We're going out towards the Hill Country for a wildflower tour and will do a little antiquing. She'll be running with good company - my '84 107 is tagging along (my brother driving) and my other brother (no, his name's not Carl  :D )will be running with his signal red '86 300SL. Our own little mini-parade  8)

That didn't take long - chrome comes off with a little force. But it broke. Damn.

Worse - i still don't see how to get to the turn signal bulb.

Anybody?

I don't know if this applies, but I have an early '67 250SL and the plastic cover comes off by heating (melting) the plastic where it's been hot upset to attach it.  There are several hot upset locations around the periphery. I used a small tip soldering iron to "melt" the hot upset spots to move the plastic upset out of the way.... then re-hot upset them at same or slighly offset locations to re-attach.

Since you already broke something, sounds like my post is too late.
On the other hand, I didn't quite understand what you're having a problem with though, so my response may be way off base.  if so, just ignore.

halman,
Inside the light housing in my early '67 250SL there are 3 bulbs --- a turn signal bulb, a parking lamp (the tiny ones you're referring to) ---- see below for more on this, and the fog lamp with a silvered reflector backing.

The parking lamp works from the light switch on the dash.... one click to left (counter-clockwise) turns on the driver side (left) parking lamps on both headlamp and tail lamp.  Another click to the left turns off the left parking lamps and turns on the right (passenger side) ones.

These parking lamps were used extensively in Europe since on-street parking often meant parking in very narrow streets, and often double parking (in the 60's)... or having to park partway out into the street overnight or while in a nightclub 'til the wee hours.  Depending on what side of the street you were parking (one way streets often required parking on the "wrong" side of the street, for example...especially on the small streets (Gasse) in the old-city parts of town (Alt-Stadt).  The appropriate side parking lights were turned on to warn drivers coming down the street that your car was parked there --- probably partially out into the street.... so don't hit it.
