Poll: what kind of event would you like to see?
« on: October 17, 2003, 01:04:35 »
The board of the group will be meeting (virtually) on Tuesday, October 28. In order to help us plan for next year's events, please indicate what kind of event you would like to see us organize.

This year we held two tech sessions (in Blacklick, Ohio and in Amsterdam, the Netherlands) and we had planned for a rally (Spa-Sofia-Speyer) this summer, but not enough people signed up. We COULD do this rally next summer. Tom Sargeant, board member, is hosting a get-together in Northern Virginia on October 26th: http://sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=854

Can you please have a think about what sort of meetings and events you would like for us to organize and post your suggestions here?

Thanks!
Cees

How about holding a Pagoda gathering in conjunction with the Goodwood Festival of Speed, in June, 2004?  South of England, looks like it's not too far from Brighton.  Try to gather up the Dutch-Belgian-British-Irish members (you're all going to the FOS, right?), plus any other strays who might be in town.

For the NY/NJ/New England cars:
Meet on a summer Sunday at 11:00 on the south parking lot at Tanglewood, Massachussetts, in the Berkshires. Drool over the cars for an hour. Have a nice picnic together on the Tanglewood Lawn. Hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra in its afternoon Tanglewood concert. Drive back around 6:00 pm. Such a program might also interest spouses who don't care about cars. Maximum driving time one-way  should be around three hours, lawn tickets to the concert are about $15 per person (My problem: I'll probably not be able to participate due to other travel).

Cees, I hope Joe is able to hold the Blacklick event again. I would also offer that the Mercedes Benz Club of America is holding their naional convention in Mansfield Ohio in 2004 (end of July first of August). The main venue will be the Mid-Ohio race course. It would be a good gathering point for 113's. However, the by-laws state that you need to be a member of the MBCA to participate in US national or regional events.

I will be at Mid-Ohio next summer!  But, in general, I would think that there are pleanty of "open to the public" car shows around the world that we could get a handfull of Pagodas to attend.  I would like to see the Events Forum full of announcements of car shows, rallys, and such that are open to the public.  This is great fun for us and publicity for our group.

With regards to our own private events, I would like to see an annual international event.  This event would be held in different nations each year, maybe on a 5 year rotation using Eastern USA, Western USA, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, and Australia.  This could include some or all of the following:
- a concourse for the very best Pagodas
- a display for the rest of the Pagodas
- a dinner with keynote speaker
- a tech session
- a rural/fun driving event
- a performance driving event
- a parts swap meet

Hello all.

I also think that Rodd is on the money.

Two other possibilities occur to me. First, wherever it may be, a staged 'trial' event may put a bit of spark into things: hill climb, track, obstacle and navigation stages, for example. With a collection of closely matched cars, the results will be a pretty good measure of driver/navigator ability. Thinking aloud now, it might even be possible to set up identical competition parameters such that the event could be duplicated on several continents and the results pooled for comparison.....

Second, this is effectively an online community: maybe it is possible to stage a couple of online events - a swapmeet/parts auction, an online tech session, a question and answer session with a Pagoda 'great' (Bohringer?) or some such.

Good luck to the board for its deliberations.

Cheers,

kns.

Kns - good of you to ask! Unfortunately ... the meeting did not happen, as too many of the board members could not make it in the end. It's been rescheduled for November 13, i.e. next week Thursday.

We'll be "talking" (via internet chat; after all, the 11 board members are spread across two continents and 4 countries) about: the website; a promotional card or brochure we can hand out to other Pagoda enthusiasts; the Ownership, Maintenance & Repairs manual, and
the elections we plan to hold for the board positions early next year, among other things.

This will be board meeting no. 14 in a little over one year. It's really great to see how the group has taken off since its humble beginnings this past February. We now have over 400 regular members, and well over 100 full members.

I second George's Goodwood idea. Its in the very south of the UK and even you could make it without too much trouble!!

OK Guys, Goodwood sounds ... great! Let's go ahead and organize this and if I can be there I will be for sure, and it should be interesting for others from Holland, Belgium, France etc. to go as well. I will contact you (Ben/Naj) off-line.

So, on this Goodwood FOS thing, would it be reasonable to stay in Brighton?  About 30-35 miles (50-60 km) away from Goodwood, according to Yahoo maps.

If yes, any chance of specifying a hotel as the "official" lodgings?  If the FOS is anything like the Monterey Historics, I suspect anyone travelling from out of the area will need to make reservations soon if we want to be assured of a place to stay.

Info on the Festival of Speed is at this site:
http://www.goodwood.co.uk/
Click on Motorsports, then on Festival of Speed.  Note that tickets MUST be purchased in advance.  Dates are June 25, 26 and 27, 2004.

Naj, you may finally get that Tusker I owe you.

Thanks!
********Per Rodd's advice above, discussion of the Goodwood FOS has been moved to the Events section.  Thanks for setting it up, Rodd! George

You can make your Goodwood FOS plans in the Events section of our forum.

Are there any more ideas for other events that our group can host?

Thanks,

How about a Pagoda gathering in Los Angeles next spring or summer?  We seem to have the largest concentration of 113's in daily use, surely we can assemble a group event with an impressive turnout.  I'd love to see 100 or more Pagoda's in one place, anyone else?
